I posted in the Introduce Yourself thread, but looks like this forum gets more traffic.

I am a 27 year old swim coach in relatively good health.  I gave up competitive swimming nine years ago due to injury but began coaching part time six years ago, full time three years ago.  Over those past six years, I have been relatively active - going through phases of working out hard for a few months at a time.  I am 5'8" and weigh about 135.  I am definitely fit and eat very healthy (recovering vegan - now eating everything but heavy dairy and refined sugar).

I am determined to do well in my first sprint triathlon on August 10.

I am out of shape because I was working in a remote village in Africa for six months through March, but I've started training five days a week as of two weeks ago.

The swimming aspect I am not worried about - sure, I'm out of shape now, but with three months of training, a half mile will be a cake walk for me.   I hope to be in the top 15 out of the water out of about 100.  I know most of my competition since it's mostly a local showing, and I think this is do-able.  My top three swimmers (on the team I coach) have been the top three out of the water the past two years.

The biking will be a total trip.  I need to get a bike.  I've never biked before in my life.  I learned how as a child but never took interest in it.   I am looking on bikesdirect for a bike, but haven't a CLUE what to get... PLEASE PLEASE HELP.  I know it's going to be tough to get in shape for the bike without one, so I'm hoping to buy one much sooner than later and get my butt out there on the road a few times a week.  Right now I'm following the beginner 2x balanced workout plan.  It's a four month plan but I only have three so I'm skipping the first month altogether and jumping in at month two.  So far, so good.

The running I am less worried about.  I've never competed running either, but I am going to run a prep 5K on the 4th of July.  I can run two miles without issue now, and have no qualms about adding another 1.5 over the next few months.

I think I'm within reason to believe I can do this.  My only concerns are: my hips.  I am in excruciating, almost numbing, pain the day AFTER every run.  No doctors have ever been able to figure out what is going on with my hips but I have gone through various stages of intense pain and no pain for the past ten years.  They do not hurt during swimming or biking, or much during my run.  It is the day after and occasionally when I have to spend more than couple of hours on my feet (coaching/singing).  But then, the pain is BAD.  I am using Topricin & Aleve right now, seeing the doctor in a couple of weeks again.  I am determined to do this regardless of the pain though!!

Thoughts, advice, honesty, everything welcome!

Thanks & be blessed!

Welcome!

You seem comfortable and accepting of your capabilities and workout plan - that's good.

Some recommendations regarding a bike is, if anything, don't overspend and get fitted (if you can).  Don't buy the cheapest bike you can, but certainly don't purchase a top of the line model.

Disclaimer - I am not a doctor or work in the medical field.  Regarding your hips -
1). Have you been to a specialist yet to get the issue looked at/into?
2). Properly-fitted running shoes make a world of difference.  See if you can get a footstrike evaluation, which may help you get the proper shoe.
3). Do you stretch after running/jogging?  Do you over-exert yourself?
4). Have you checked into orthotics?

There could be other things that contribute to this and should be evaluated by your doctor.

Good luck.

Some general thoughts:

1 - It would help if you listed the distances of your tri. Sounds like a sprint, but it would help to know.

2 - Are you planning to do more Tris? If so, then it might be worthwhile to invest in a decent bike now. Otherwise, get a used one or borrow one to get the feel for it. The hardest part of getting a bike online is proper fit. If you can, I'd suggest going to a local bike store and checking out there selection. At the very least, you're going to want to schedule a fit session that will get you comfortable on the bike.

3 - Just as with the bike, fit is everything for running shoes. Visit a local running store with someone that can fit you properly. They should do a gait analysis with some running or walking and help you figure out some shoe options that might help with your pain.

I would suggest you change your focus. I have no idea of what "well" is for you, and honestly, because you've never done a triathlon, you don't either. If you train and race your best, you did well.

My opinion on bikes your first bike. When you get your first one, you'll learn about fit and probably get a bike that comes really close to fitting you if you do your homework. But you don't know what you really want in two years from now until you've sat on a bike for about 300 hours. Your opinions will develop with experience. Make your best guess, but plan on changing the bike or getting another one eventually. Don't agonize over it. The important thing in the beginning is that the bike basically fits you (and possibly an experienced cyclist) as close as you can tell, then go to work on the engine.

And to answer your questions...

1) Yes. I've been to specialists of pretty much every kind - orthopedic, muscular, physical therapists (3), trainers, GPs.  I've had x-rays, scans of various kinds, blood work, etc.  Nothing of benefit yet.

2) I do need to get better running shoes.  Where can I get myself fitted or whatnot for the appropriate pair?

3) Stretch, yes. Over-exert, sometimes.

4) They only hurt more.

Yep - definitely a sprint! 0.5 mi swim, 14 mi bike, 3.2 mi run

If I enjoy it, I plan to do more.  I want to have a bike regardless, because I think it's something I will continue with on a casual basis even if I opt out of Tris.  Your advice = very helpful!!

Thanks

Hi Jill - welcome.

I admire the fact that you are attempting to overcome some limits to your physical being (bad hips) to do this.  It takes a lot of guts to know that you will face adversity and go forward anyway.  Congratulations.

As for the bike.  I would suggest that you look into getting a bike that will suit you that is less than top of the line.  I agree that you will grow into your biking preferences, and that will determine the bike that you ultimately end up with.  Had I seen this post two months ago, I would have directed you to the thread entitled "Sale on Javelin Complete Bikes" at this location : http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/search/query.asp?collapsethreads=1&action=search&searchforumid=all&keywords=&author=&days=lastlogin

There were several bikes in this sale were worth way more than they were being sold for.  Unfortunately, all of the road bikes have been sold and only tri bikes are left.  I hesitate to recommend that you look at a tri bike as your first, because if you choose to not pursue triathlon after your first experience, then all you will have is a tri bike that is not great for cruising around on.  That being said, I am told that the Sizzano and Varese are still available from Javelin.

I know a lot of folks use the Motobecane bikes from bikesdirect.com for their first bikes and seem to be happy with them, so that is another option.

Have fun, use the resources here, and do what you can do to the best of your ability.  That is all you can ask of yourself.

Do you have a running store nearby - ie, one that sells ONLY running shoes and apparel (they often have cute, catchy names involving running )? Don't go to a dept. store, or a sporting goods store, etc - they won't know what they're doing, most likely. At a running store, they will be much more likely to be able to fit you properly.

After you find a pair that you like and works for you (and I'm told it sometimes takes trying out a few pairs), then if you can find the exact make and model on sale somewhere, by all means, save yourself the money when it's time to replace them.

I bought my bike off that site a couple of months ago. It's not the top of the line but it is a lot better than what I had. I have my first tri in 3 weeks. I felt I didn't want to invest a lot of money into a bike until I knew exactly what I wanted. I love to bike. I certainly think I will enjoy competing in tri's and I think I will do it for a long time.

Basically, I felt getting a lesser expensive bike was the right move for me until I am able to race some and get a feel for what I want.

Somehow, we don't have anything like that around... but I'll look in the surrounding areas.  I am running in a decent pair of Asics now but would like something better within the next month or two (before my 5k).  Thanks for the advice!
