I've gone through 2 pairs of Zoot tri shorts since the spring and I didn't really train all that much. I would use them to ride and swim plus a couple sprint races. The spandex gradually brok down in the first pair to the point where they had no elastic at all and basically became a set of baggies in the pool. My second pair is now doing the same and I give them another couple weeks before they are useless. I really can't afford to burn through $65 tri shorts like this. I suppose I should get specific shorts to bike, plus a set of swim shorts, plus a set of tri shorts to race in. Anyone have good luck with any other brands?

Anything I wear into the pool gets worn out pretty quickly.  I usually look for swimsuits that are on sale and get a couple at a time,  they will last about a year.  I have 2 pairs of cycling shorts that I've been using for 2 years and are still like new.   Like you said, trishorts just for racing.

Yeah...it's probably the pool killing them. I average 2 swim workouts per week and I guess all the chemicals really do a job.

After posting the above message I remembered that I saw a good deal on Hind tri-shorts at www.excelsports.com in the clearence section.  $59 mens shorts for $10, the only size they have is XL.  May be worth a try.  The info just says shorts, not tri-shorts, but they have an 800 number.  I'm guessing they are tri-shorts.  I have 3 pars of tri-shrts right now and don't need anymore, otherwise I would get a pair at that price.

I bought mine from desoto sports called Power Tri Short (#PTS3). They usually retail for $56 but they have a sale for $33 because they are coming out with a new model.

http://desotosports.com/products/specials.asphas them for $33. They only have black, S, XL, and XXL as of right now that I checked.

Also, http://www.trisports.com/desotpowtris.htmlhas the same shorts for $33, black all sizes. You usually get a 15% discount through this site but it was a sale/closeout item, I tried to sneak it in and they called me to tell me it didn't apply.

I haven't used it yet, but my friend who introduced them to me, has one and said he uses it in the pool all the time and he has had it for about a year now, and had no problems.

I bought a pair of Titan tri shorts a year ago on sale for under $30. I have used them as bike shorts and for racing and they have held up pretty well. I also bought a pair of Titan jammers for my swim training. I always wear them in the shower after I swim to rinse out as much of the chlorine as I can.

Yeah, chlorine wrecks havoc on swim suits.  They may be harder to find, but if you get a Nylon suit rather than Lycra, it will last a lot longer.  Also be sure to rinse any suit out in cold water after a swim in a chlorinated pool.

I have orca tri suits and the same thing is been happening. Especially around the (you know what) area. It is a bummer because you spend a good amount on every pair. Anyhow, I am definitely switching to something cheaper for my swim workouts and leave the cool looking and expensive tri suites only for racing...

I have two Speedo Jammers in polyester (not lycra) that I have been wearing for about 8 months. I swim 2-4 times a week, and the suits are almost as good as new (ie. in one piece and still completely opaque). Before that I burned through a couple of pairs of lycra shorts in about  two months. Also, be sure to rinse your suits out immediately after swimming. I wouls also reccommend a produce called "Suit Solution" it is suppesed to neutralize chlorine, and it seems to work.

I say save the tri-shorts for racing and swim in something that's more chlorine resistant

I don't mind so much paying $50 for a set of shorts if they last but less than one season is just a waste of money. I always shower after my swim and make sure to soap up my shorts to get the chemicals out. My first pair were a deep cobalt blue and within a couple months had actually turned a light purple...very dramatic change. I guess I'll find some relatively cheap swim shorts to trash at the pool.

I've used the Pear Izumi tri shorts for adventure racing and their comfortable and rugged. Havent used anything else. I'm also using them for swimming now and so far they are great.

It may be best to get regular cheapo bike shorts for trng and keep race specific (more expensive) shorts for just racing.

I've been using the same bike shorts for about 3 years. 1 performance brand shorts (cheapo ones) and 1 cannondale brand ones (kinda cheapo ones...about $50). Each has about 4,000 miles logged in them and they have little signs of breakdown.

I swim in speedos, which last about 10 months after my 6,000-7000 meters per week swim workouts, then I change them out. I use these and they seem to last the longest: http://www.trisports.com/tyr4innyltra.html

Zoot shorts seem to be just for racing as they don't hold up very well. So I have a pair of desoto shorts and 1 zoot racing suit that I only use specifically for racing. My desoto shorts have about 6 races on them with little signs of wear and my zoot shorts have about 3 races on them with no signs of wear.

Do these have the rubber "leg grippers" at the bottom?

I've gone through a couple pairs of desoto tri shorts as well. I really think it is the pool that breaks them down.

I really noticed it this month after spending a lot more time in the pool.

I went and got a pair of jammers to swim in, and saving the tri shorts to run/bike in, and of course, race in come next season.

For freshwater, I imagine they are ok, but the chlorine and other chemicals seem to really break 'em down.

Echo the same about chlorine. It's a killer. I have swimmers and buy suits in mass quantity each season. My suggestion is use a jammer for your pool training and save the tri shorts for the races.

Ditto here with the Perfoemance shorts for training, perfectly adequate, comfrtable and durable. I use the century model here for $25 but I've bought them as cheap as $20. http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=10563&subcategory_ID=1120

I swim in Speedo boxer style trunks, my wife had bought several pairs at a closeout a few years ago, they've held up well. Probably a lot of drag, but I consider it to be resistance training. :-)

I do a few bricks in my tri short and top, just to make sure everything works correctly and feels comfortable, but don't use them extensively for training.

Many tri shorts have "leg grippers" built in. It's just a band of exposed rubber stitching on the inside of the bottom of the leg that helps prevent the legs from riding up.

I just ordered a set of sugoi power tri shorts for $28 and a pair of Speedo Jammers for $24 from GoTriSports. Hopefully I like them both and they fit well. Next stop is a set of biking shorts...I've been wanting a little more padding in the ass/crotch for my training rides anyway.
