Any suggestions for recovering after a HIM? I'm staying in disney til the friday after the race. Want to be able to enjoy the parks. A little discomfort is ok, just want to be able to walk. I told my wife if I'm hurtin bad, I'm renting a rascal. She would rather I didn't. I was advised to get a deep tissue massage after the race....good idea?? Ice bath??
Thanks
Bryan

Get some Sportlegs and use them. They may help you PR as well as you won't feel the burn when you are pushing it. They help keep your lactic acid buildup in check. I use them on long hard training days and races. As the instructions go.... 1 hour before and then every 2-3 hours.

A nice post-race ice bath might help too... the sooner after your race, the better, IMO...

You'll be tired, but fine for walking the parks.

Make sure you hydrate and eat immediately (or nearly) after the race.  If you can get some serious fruit in the body.   I like to eat bananas and oranges after the race, move to a milkshake and then have a full meal for dinner.

Take the ice bath.  Soak for 20-25 minutes.  And before bed stretch.

Depending on your level of fitness and ability to recover, you may just be fatigued the next day and sore in a few spots.

Last year, I went to Seattle for three days immediately after my Ironman.  The only problem I had was walking down stairs/hills and feeling rundown the entire time.

I have done the HIM the last two years (making this 3rd in row), 2 goofy's, numerous individual Disney marathon's (yes I love disney and bring the family) and I always walk the parks that same day and/or the next.

What I do is take an icebath as soon as I return to my room, Also make sure you get some good food in to help recover, but I feel the quicker you get up and walking after the better the recovery. Also make sure you are well hydrated as the HIM is brutally hot in run so will lose a lot. That night I sleep wonderful after a full day.

Also, massages are great. I kind of like the small ones on-site directly (no more than 10-20 minutes) after then set up a nice resort massage the day after. Swan/Dolphin is my favorite one.

Nothing new to add...Recap!

Continue to hydrate and eat RIGHT after the race.

10-20 min Ice Bath....I'd recommend 10 ice/10 hot shower or tub/10 ice.  This makes your legs into a vascular pump to get the lactic acid out.  I LOVE ice !baths.  yeah, I'm sick.  I'm also not sore after my races.

A massage the day after is also a great idea.

Sports legs can't hurt but I wouldn't count on a magic pill to make it all happen.  Like everything else in this sport that you want theirs a little pain/time and money that goes with it.

Have fun at Disney!!!

I'm a big fan of the ice bath, as well.

And also of the easy spin, the next morning, usually. Loosens up the legs.

Welcome back Steve, but sorry to say there is no miracle anything in that IV bag, provided one takes the necessary steps to stay hydrated while racing and re hydrates properly after racing.

No real reason to overwhelm the medical staff, if even available with false hopes of the mighty IV helping anything unless there is some extenuating circumstance. There may be a placebo effect.

Refuel with good carbs and protien and rehydrate properly and that's the first step in a speedy recovery.

I may opt for the massage after my HIM, still up in the air about that.

My failing will be the large quantity's of beer I'll drink the night of the race.

I use power bar recovery drink. Last year after the race I took a sponge bath in the parking lot and then drove down with my wife to key west. We partyed on Duval at around 11pm! The next day we woke up and rented bikes to ride around. What a great time! So try the recovery drink
