Subject: overwhelmed- need swim coach/advice

Hi,

Completed my first marathon (nj marathon) on Sunday! I always was in awe of Tri-athaletes so why can't I be one.  I just turned 38 and did the marathon so why can't I do a TRI??   Unfortuantely besides the running part I need to start litterally from scratch and figured since I can barely float -I am desparetly trying to find a swiiming coach to learn freestyle in the monmouth county area.  It took me along time to post to this forum due to my fear of learning to swim.   I am hoping someone has been in my shoes and can reccomend a swim instructor in momouth county area.  (I live in red bank)

And oh yeah - don't own a bike yet either- and trying to to buy one under $1,000 if anybody has any suggestions.  THX

Hey there.  If you can do a marathon, you have a good aerobic base so endurance won't be an issue for you.  Swimming, especially for a sprint tri (400-500 yards usually) will come along if you work on it for a couple of months.  I'm further north than you so I can't offer any specific advice on pools and coaches.  I found a coach through my local Y which I joined just to swim.

As far as bikes go, you should have no problem finding a good road bike for around/under $1000.  Giant has several models and I think the felt F85 is around $1000 as well - very nice bike similar to the F75 that I'm riding.  Visit your local bike shop and try out as many as you can and see what works best for you.  Good luck!

So far I've skipped the swim instructor and just worked with the Total Immersion video. It's allowed me, I think, to be passable for the Tri swim but nowhere near competitive. During the offseason I'm definitely going to invest some time/money in lessons to try and improve. As far as the bike goes if you put in some time you can definitely find a bike for under $1000 that will suffice. Just make sure the bike shop does a proper fit for you as I bought my bike at a good deal on eBay but the fit is not perfect for me and definitely creates some issues. Good Luck!

First thing I did was found a local Tri team.  I think that would be a great thing for you to do also.  I found one that is probably not too far from you.

http://www.jstriclub.org/   give them a look.  They most likely would be able to help with swim and bike.

 Best of luck to you.

As far as the swim goes, Total Immersion is great.  My coach is in Bridgewater, NJ.  (I don't know where you live  but maybe you;re close enough)  here is his web address http://www.virtualswim.com/swim_lessons.html

It helped me a great deal but you can do w/o it if you want to save money.

You can get a decent road bike for under $1,000 try getting a used bike on Ebay.

Good luck

There are two tri clubs in Monmouth. Sandy Hookers (http://www.sandyhookers.org/shtc.htm) who have 4 sprint tri's this summer at Long Branch and there is Jersey Shore Triathlon Club (http://jstriclub.org/). I joined Monmouth University pool. For $80 you get 3 months unlimited swimming. They also have a masters club. Contact Rob, 732-571-5601, about pool and masters.
