OK.

No one in the swimming world measures training volume like this. There is no 1/4 mile freestyle.

Use yards or metres to describe swim distances.

The event that is closest is the 400 m free, the companion event in yards is the 500 y free.

I agree.  I was looking at some of the other posts that say 16 1/4 lap, or whatever, and it's making me shake my head.  If you want to measure your swim, then learn to use swim measurements....that is the standard of measure.

If your pool is yards:

50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 1650

If your pool in meters:

50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500

However a lot of sprint triathlons have swim distances of 1/4 or 1/2 mile.  Can be confusing for newbies.

I was watching the SEC indoor championship on ESPN and they ran the "mile". I did not realize that anyone still ran the mile. In High school it was the 1600m and for everyone else I thought it was the 1500m. Just seems odd that the mile was never replaced

I thought a length was down, but a lap was down+back.

What if I have a 24 foot round pool and for now am swimming against the wall, how many laps would I need to do to get to a 1/4 mile? I am new at this and a total novice. Just starting to get into swimming for workout. thank you,

Pool are typically 25 Yards or in some cases 25 meters. A length is down and touch the other side. A lap is down, touch the other side and back to the wall you started from "down and back". So a length of your typical pool is 25 yards, a lap is 50 yards and 10 laps = 500 yards.

thank you. so just that im clear, my 24 foot round pool is meters? and I lap would be24 ? sorry for all of the questions. I know its hard to do in a above ground round pool. thank you

Your going to get dizzy and hit the wall a lot. If you swim across that pool it's about 8 yards. I would suggest finding a lap pool to swim in so you don't spend all your time making turns.

If it is a round above ground pool, then it is most likely 24 feet and so swimming across one length would be 24 feet. A lap across and back would be 48 feet. Lot of laps to = 1/4 mile!
