Great swim last night. Thanks Larry & Michelle for hosting this! It's been great to train in open water, and the dark blue buoy really helps to work on sighting

One question; how was that 2/10 measured? 1/10 from dive platform to buoy on a straight line? Just curious!

Thanks again!

I also really enjoyed the swim last night. Thanks so much for putting it on. I have 5 tri's (4 sprints and 1 Oly) under my belt and have had some sort of mental break down on every single swim. For some reason, I think maybe race anxiety, I sort of panic about 100 to 200 meters into the swim. I think I might unconciously be going out too hard. I swam 6 laps last night no problem. Hopefully I can do that come race time. Thanks again!

Theskirv, if you find the solution to swim panic, let me know. I've done 5 tris so far (2 sprint, 1 oly, 1 him) and still freak out about 200y into the swim. Fine for sprints, but really not fun in the him. I've gotta get down to Wenonah for more ow practice...

chrisuletz - I think it is just a matter of getting caught up in the race excitement and going out to strong. Your situation sounds identical to mine in that once you get over the mental part no matter what the remainder of the race is you can finish with no problems. Stop by Wenonah. It is a good test as the water offers a pretty limited visibility. If you can swim there, you should be able to swim anywhere. I think the key is to go out slow and swim your race.

THeskirv:

Swim Panic.....Get into as many open water swims as possible. Forget the nice warm pool after Memorial Day. Go to as many clinics as you can.

And here are a couple of weird ones..they don't hurt if they don't work. There is a product called Rescue Remedy, a stress reliever. It is homeopathic. Also one called Gelsimium, helpful for stage fright.

I am planning on attending my first open water swim practice with you guys. I did one tri last year and have been training in the pool getting ready for the NJ State one in 2 weeks. Just wondering what to expect. How far is the swim? do you do a bike or run after? Thanks!! Looking forward to it.

There is a buoy in the lake at the end opposite of the diving platform. One (tight) loop from platform to buoy and back equals approximately 2/10 of a mile. If you swim wide that will increase some. You can do whatever you want as far as the swim. Sign in, pay the insurance or show your USAT card, tip the lake staff and lifeguard (there are jars; usually throw a few dollars in each) and then do your workout. You can do as many or as few loops as you want in the time you have. It's pretty free form.

Any bike or run workouts are arranged separately by folks other than Larry or Michelle. Some tri teams will pre-plan a workout for before or after. Sometimes there is even tailgating to celebrate the unveiling of some Diva's custom built pink tri bike.

I have a couple of questions:

Are we swimming Thursday?  Is there an age limit?  My daughter is doing a kids tri and I wanted to get her used to open water.  She is a strong swimmer and I will be there with her.  Thoughts?

Thanks

Matt

Due to the tragedy this weekend there will not be an open water swim this Thursday. Michele and I are, quite simply, devastated.

As many of you know we started the open water swims out of concern that many people don't have the access to practice open water swimming which is very different than pool swimming. Hopefully we've helped people over the last few years to become comfortable in open water, with others swimming near them and race with a little more peace of mind but as for now it is just too soon for us to get back into that environment.

We thank all of you for your letters of support. I can't overstate how much they mean to us at a time like this. Please keep Mr. Hobgood and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Larry - As I said in my email to Michele on Sunday night, I can not imagine the thoughts that you are dealing with let alone Mr. Hobgood's family. You should however know that I do not consider myself a strong swimmer and after 3 years of racing the NJ State Tri I can tell you that I have never felt safer and more watched over than at your race.

I don't think that there is any triathlete that doesn't feel for this situation, and those of us that raced on Sunday (at least those that I have spoken with) all are somber following the tragedy, but all I have responded to anyone who commented on the "news" is that had they been there they would know that there were plenty of support and "eyes" in and along the water. We can all second guess what we should have/could have done differnt but at this point all we can do is learn from the situation and mourn the loss of a tri-family member.

Larry and Michele I want to thank you both for putting together a top notch event which I was priviledged to participate in.  What happened to Mr. Hobgood is tragic and sent shivers down my spine when I read about it.  However, I must say that, also being a tri newbie and a beginner swimmer, I felt safe and watched throughout the swim.  I can only imagine what you're going through, but please hang in there and set up many more events for us in the future!

Larry and Michele,

Just wanted to echo the sentiments already stated and thank you for the incredible, top-notch event you put on. It was the safest, most organized race I've been in or at and I hope you'll come to realize this to over time.

Larry, you have no reasons to feel guilty about the tragedy. There are few races where you can find more support in the water. But heart attacks are beyond the control of anybody watching you...

Beginner here.

First, I would like to extend my condolences and prayers to the family of Mr. Hobgood.  I'd also like to extend prayers to Larry and Michele.  I personally know a member of their group who works for them and states, with great confidence, that Larry and Michele do a great job to make sure the events are well organized and safe for all the participants.

As a beginner and not a strong swimmer, the greatest fear is knowing your strength in open water.  With that said and at the risk of coming off as selfish, may you recommend another open water swim clinic held in the area since today's swim in south jersey is cancelled.

I live in Bel Air, MD which is 30 minutes north of Baltimore.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Please forgive me if you feel this email and request is inappropriate at this time.

Sincerely,

B&H

Gunpowder State Park allows swimming AFTER the lifeguards are off duty. I think you can swim along the shore line so the water isn't too deep, or have someone kayak along side.
