This situation is a complete disaster for me.  I am flying in with the family and staying  at friends in KC.  My kids are too young to get up at 5 AM then spend the day at the park. So, friends and family will not be at the finish line.  I just got my head handed to me by my wife (big time).  Frankly, I would not have signed up for the event if I would have know these logistics.  I get the efforts to make it work as a full day event and trust it will be a great day for most.  However, it will simply not work for me.

I dare day this may be my last tri for a long time.

Seeing that the roads will open back up at noon or 12:30 p.m., could your family make it up for the finish? That seems to be the best option for those who can't get there by 6:40 a.m.

Hope it works out for everyone!
I went on a long run and feel much better about all of this

Yeah if the roads open at noonish then that should work for those of us who won't finish in less than 5 hours 30 minutes. You should be OK unless you're that fast.

...just to follow up on this...but PLEASE wait for the Spectator's Guide to be posted.

Clif notes version:

Spectators will be allowed to enter the park all the way up til approximately 0900...but we still recommend spectators to arrive early. Spectators planning to arrive up til 0900 will need to enter from the SouthEast on 458 Road.

Spectators will be allowed to exit the park anytime after 0915. Spectators will exit North on 458. It will be the only way open so it's a no-brainer.

Spectators will not be allowed to return to the park til appoximately 1215.

A shuttle service is being arranged to transport spectators to/from transition to the "iron-cross". During the hours of 0845-1145.

All of this will be spelled out in the Guide...I am just following up on the false speculations.

Be prepared for a run course change...for the better. It is the course we wanted in the first place...more shade, more spectator friendly, etc...it will all be within the park. Spectators will be able to follow the athletes...it will take the athletes through the campgrounds. The campgrounds are packed that time of year so it should add another cheering section.

Thanks.

I just wanted to say thanks so much for working your tail off to help accommodate the needs of our spectators. I know we all really appreciate it as athletes and our families and friends will be excited to have the opportunity to cheer us all on at multiple points!!

More RD's should follow suit and directly address the needs of the race's athletes.

If spectators wish to enter the park between the hours of 0640-0845. they must enter from the South on 458 Road. The Northern section (north of the Iron-Cross) of 458 road will be closed 0710-0930.
Spectators at no times will be in the same lane of traffic athletes.
Spectators are asked to use extreme caution while traveling on roads with cyclists in the other lane.

Spectators will NOT be allowed to enter the park between 0845-1215 hours.

Spectators will be allowed into the park anytime after 1215 hours.

Ryan -

Thanks for the update.  Can spectators park at the Iron cross section and ride a shuttle back to the race site?  I understand the shuttle will end at 11:45 and they have to find away back to their cars on their own.

No. Spectators will need to park at the park and take the shuttle to the cross. The shoulders around the IronCross will be reserved for spectating.

I think the spectators will definitely help break up the monotony of the hills! I'm looking forward to riding through that section now on race day.

...hopefully there will still be folks there when my cute lil' back-o-pack self comes chargin' through!

  • I figure after they scrape me up off the bike course they'll take me to the end so I can see you finish! I like that the course is basically broken into four pieces. That makes it seem less long.

I'll be thinking `Just make it to the cross' after the swim, then `just make it to the turnaround' then `just make it to the cross' then `just make it to the turnaround' and so on and so forth.

Haha I will of course!!! I hear ya on the `just finishing' part. I figure if I can ride the mountains of Colorado everyday for a week a year, I can accomplish this. It's that pesky run right afterwards! I do love to run though. Especially when it's flat.

Guys here is a video showing the expo site. I am just letting people know that they are going to want to make sure they make it in for the Friday night concert. Lawrence has a great music scene...and combining that with the IM Expo it should make for a fun evening.

The expo will be setup similar to the concert in the video.
