Total Time = 1h 49m 26s
Overall Rank = 222/232
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 27/27
Pre-race routine:

Got everything ready the night before. Had help from my little one, as you can see in the avitar. Got up at 5am and had whole wheat toast with pb&j and bowl of oatmeal. Had a G2 on way to race. I am glad I got there early because parking was sort of crazy. I picked up my race packet, got marked and racked my bike and waited. Ran into Marianne (mav) before the start. Talked with some other newbies. Saw my mom and brother before we headed over to the water.
Event warmup:

Not much. I was in the last wave and had to wait about 20 minutes because rescue had to pull 2 people out of the water.
Swim
  • 14m 4s
  • 440 yards
  • 03m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in the "newbie" wave so I went up front because I figured I can keep up with most people. I started off well, probably a little too fast, and ended up veering off course. I must of added an additional 50-75yds to my swim. I also was out of breath after that. I did the breaststroke most of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Although the water was 55 degrees, it wasn't that bad. I am glad I went in last week. I need to practice OWS, swimming in a wetsuit, and swimming longer distances. Time for Masters swim.
Transition 1
  • 05m 5s
Comments:

This was okay. I walked/ran over to my bike. I took my time because I didn't want to forget anything. I had a mishap with my number pinned on my shirt.
What would you do differently?:

Get a race belt.
Bike
  • 55m 25s
  • 11.99 miles
  • 12.98 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt good on the bike. I am getting more and more comfortable on it. I was pretty much by myself the whole way. I passed 2 girls and was passed by 5-6 people. The sun was out, there wasn't any wind, it was a good ride. Again, I am glad I did this route last week. Took 5 min off.
What would you do differently?:

1. Get fitted for the bike. 2. Practice Hills. 3. Put the clipless pedals on. 4. Practice Hills. 5. Learn to switch gears. 6. Practice Hills. 7. Repeat #'s 2,4,6 x100. 8. Drink more
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

This was fine. In and out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 33m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off up a hill. I walked it. My calves were cramping up, which is the first time this has happened. I started jogging after the hill with some periods of walking. There was no way this was 5k. The course was nice through the park.
What would you do differently?:

Run more. Drink more on bike
Post race
Warm down:

Met my mom and brother. Found out my wife and kids went home because the kids were cranky. I grabbed some oranges and had a Clif bar. Walked around for a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Now that I have my base down, I think, I need to start working on getting faster. Masters swim, more hills on the bike, running more.

Event comments:

For my first ever triathlon with just about 12 weeks removed from doing no exercise and 20lbs heavier, I am thrilled. I also know I trained enough to finish the race, so I was hoping I would do a little better. This was my first and last DFL. I have another race in 5 weeks and I will be signing up for my first Oly today. I guess I am hooked.

Congrats on the first race.

Those "things you would do differently", BT can help.  Check out the MA forum for group trainings.  Besides trainings, we also do the "group goofing around".

Congrats on becoming a triathlete!

As DK points out we do lots of fun stuff with the BT crowd. Check out the MA board for some group training we do.

Awesome job!!  Congrats on finishing your first!!  Ya, that first hill on the run was killer, and the wait for the start as they pulled people out did NOT help my nerves.     Great job, though, and you weren't DFL...I looked at the results, there were plenty of people (in lower age brackets even) who finished after you....so kudos on a great job!!!!

Hey man!

Great job on the race.  Wish I had been able to figure out who you were. Maybe next time.  The bike was a tough course, and the cold water killed me too!

Anyway, welcome to the crazy club

Great first race! That wasn't an easy course: the cold water and relentless rollers challenged everyone. I concur on the race belt - they make life so much easier. The most important thing is that it was fun.

Hey great work.  I swam way off course on my first tri.  I looked up and was amongst a bunch of boats.  That was confusing!  You are going to kill Hyannis.
