Whoops, just re-read the thread and realized this was bike shoes. Never mind.

Newspaper works great to dry out wet cycling shoes. Stuff your shoes with newspaper but not so full that you stretch out your shoes. In an hour or so take out the  newspaper and repeat again. I normally leave the newspaper in overnight. We use newspaper on multi day cycling trips to dry out wet shoes all of the time.

I don't have any experience with how to get the urine smell out of shoes. Wonder if I could use that excuse for a reason to buy new cycling shoes?

That works with any shoes, obviously. Where I grew up the summer dew was so heavy until noon you'd soak through any shoes you wore. I used to use the newspaper trick every day.

UPDATE: I decided to leave the shoe in the bathtub while I took a shower, figuring soap and shampoo might help. That didn't work.

I stuffed it with newspaper (mind you, this is only ONE shoe - the other one is pee-free). Helped a little. I poured Gold Bond powder into it. Still no luck. Last night, I stuck a Bounce dryer sheet in the shoe. Best results so far. Now I have a shoe that smells like Bounce with a faint urine smell.

Tomorrow, I may try the dishwasher idea. We're leaving for Rome tomorrow afternoon, so I've not had time to go to the store and purchase any of the products mentioned here.

The thing that upsets me most is it took peeing in my shoe to get 644 views!

If peeing down your leg in public is what it takes to be a great triathlete, I guess I'll just resign myself now to being mediocre.

Yeah, no offence to topicstarter but I'm also not willing to do that.

If you grew something from your shoes being wet, you need to accomplish two things kill what grew and get ride of the smell.

Lots of the ideas shared are for smell removal. If your shoes smell like urine that may work..or rather shoe. If they smell like something else you need to kill that which is why we use bleach...cheap and kills the stuff that is growing.

Peeing on your bike is optional but if you have to go and there is no porta potty or bathroom what do you expect folks to do? Longer events you have less options. Guys can stop and be discret but what are women going to do? BOP, FOP, MOP, Pros do it some choose not to. Some practice, some it comes to easily.

So far, my bike shoes are totally pristine....but this product works very well for de-stinking my diving wetsuits (which have seen gallons and gallons of pee)

Thanks to the person with the Simple Green suggestion.  That worked great, for both bike and running shoes!  To those of you replying "eew, gross"-- don't slip and fall on the wet spots left by the folks IN FRONT OF YOU!!!  If you gotta do what you gotta do, DO IT FAST.

Be careful with that, Bounce attracts bees. I'd rather have a stinky shoe than have a bee sting towards the beginning of a 30+ mile bike ride.

I have experience in this....my husband soaks my offending bike shoes in a bleach solution and take the insoles out.

Kathy seems to have the best solution...

I washed my cycling shoes and insoles and soaked them for a bit in a mix of laundry soap and bleach in the laundry tub, rinsed real well by running water and submersion and let them air dry. No hint of urine since or unusual smells.

bikeboyaug - 2008-05-13 8:55 AM It's threads like this that make me wonder if buying a used tri-suit on ebay was really such a good idea...

Lol the suit is fine just not the shoes! I was thinking that exact same thing since i'm in the market for a wetsuit for next season.

So we should all send our shoes to Kathy's husband?

"wash your shoes on easy mode in the dish washer and let it dry outside and voila!"

Dude really? put pissed in shoes in the same place you wash the dishes.  That just sounds nasty. IMHO

Another thing that may work is scent blockers and scent soaps.  Most good hunting stores, have these.  You can also find them at Sportsmans guide and for chains try Gander Mountain.
