Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:00, oatmeal, left at 3:30, ferry to race site, 9th person there (way to early!), waited for transition area to open, laid out towel, shoes, socks, water to wash feet and towel to dry, helmet, glasses, number belt, and clif bar, hung out with hubby and family, got very nervous, visited the portapotty 5 times, 2 and a half hours later got with my wave and headed for the water.
Event warmup:

a little stretching 10 minutes before and a couple puffs of the inhaler
Swim
  • 12m 13s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Couldn't get around people to even have the correct swim form, keep getting kicked or people hitting my feet, very smashed together, just did what I could and enjoyed being out there for the first half, the second half I finally got around people and did better
What would you do differently?:

Start closer to the front or more to the side
Transition 1
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

Wasn't sure if I was supposed to be hurrying or walking, strange atmosphere of no competition and just being there for fun. Poured water over my feet to wash them, then while putting my socks on I set my dry sock down on the soaked grass where I just poured the water... At least my shoes dry quickly. Wasn't sure if I was supposed to put on my number belt yet, but I did and it got in the way on the bike. Went back and forth with whether or not to wear the sunglasses, there wasn't any sun yet. Wasted to much time and didn't want to look silly running around crazy for this "girl power, no worries, little sprint" Like I said, it was a weird lets help each other and have fun cause we're here and we're girls, yay atmosphere! Which was nice and relaxed, but still not what I had prepared for.
What would you do differently?:

Use the inhaler in transition and run!
Bike
  • 39m 50s
  • 9.1 miles
  • 13.71 mile/hr
Comments:

Had to use inhaler, then couldn't get the thing back in the pocket and had to stop to do so. Wasn't used to new tires and the feel of the ride so I thought I had a flat and had to stop to check. Thank goodness, no flat! The rest of the bike went well and I was happy with my performance.
What would you do differently?:

Use inhaler in transition and know my bike better!
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

How could it take so long to set my bike on the rack and take off my helmet? Ah well. Stopped to empty out my pocket, didn't run hard at all, stopped to get off my bike, fixed my race belt, wasting time again because I didn't want to be pushing anyone out of the way
What would you do differently?:

run faster!
Run
  • 21m 22s
  • 2 miles
  • 10m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Loved the run! Tired from the bike and confused at how hard I was supposed to push myself. Just ran comfortably.
What would you do differently?:

run faster!
Post race
Warm down:

drank a bottle of water, waited 10 min to get my bike, and left

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My mind telling me this was a easy race where we were supposed to help each other and cheer each other on and not feel like we were competing. That was the theme of the weekend, helping each other and girl power and what not. It made it feel like it wasn't a real competition and was just a watered down event to make the "girls" feel good about themselves. Don't get me wrong, it was the BEST race for me to start out with and I plan to do it next year, but the atmosphere just felt like I would look silly going balls out and pushing myself to the max.

Event comments:

I just loved running in the Magic Kingdom and swimming in Bay Lake!

What an inspiring race report!!!  Definitely worth the wait.  Since I'm a "first-timer" in training, I definitely picked up some tips from you.

  1. Take my inhaler with me...never really thought of that since I haven't used it in 2 months...but what a duh!!
  2. Swim to the side - I've been working so hard on form that it would be a pity to waste all the training.

So glad you did well & you look FABULOUS in the photos...like you really had fun.

Sounds like they all better watch out next time, the competitive spirit is in you!

Congratulations!

Nice job on the race!

I am doing Danskin as my first in Pleasant Prairie and need to remember my inhaler coming out of the water.  I kind of agree with you on the 'girl-power' comments, but I was looking for a something a little less competitive for my first, especially with a 1/2m swim. YIKES!

Congratulations!  Sounds like you had fun and, even though it didn't feel like a competitive atmosphere, you had some great opportunities to learn some things for next time!  Great job (and cute pics!).

My first tri was a women only also!!!! I'm glad it was because it gave me more confidence for the co-ed races.

Enjoy your first race!

Congratulations, Heather.  You did it!

That 10 minute mile's really great and you should be proud of yourself.

Just super nice all around job your first time out.  I'm not just saying that.

Way to go, Heather. Thanks for posting a race report. It's fun to read what other people do and don't do. My socks got soaked somehow in T1 on my first event, too! You look happy and that's what counts. Looking forward to the next one??
