nscrbug - 2008-06-20 1:11 PM  Can anyone tell me if the run from the beach exit to T1 is all on concrete? Or is some of it on a grassy area? Is anyone else (except me) concerned about stepping on rocks, glass or anything else that might be on the ground while barefoot? Do any of you veterans of this race bring flip-flops and keep them near the exit of the water, and slip them on your feet as your making your way to T1?

The run to T1 is fairly long (maybe 300-400m?)... you'll come up the beach (and where they have water, grab 2 cups to pour over your feet to wash off the sand!), through some grass and then on a concrete path.  At some point they had a thin mat down on the concrete, if I remember correctly.  They really try to sweep the area really well beforehand, but of course, it's not impossible to have rocks/pebbles/other debris on the concrete.  And once you get into T1, you're running through an asphalt parking lot which is reasonably well swept, but inevitably there are rocks in there too.

You can put a pair of flip-flops or other shoes at the end of the swim to pick up on your way out -- a number of people will do this -- though I never have.  A friend of mine has a foot issue right now, and because she's not supposed to even be running, much less barefoot on concrete, she's going to stow a pair of shoes there.

Ahhh...thanks for the info on the T1 "run". This helps immensely. I too, have 2 seperate foot issues...plantar fasciitis on my left, and a toe numbing problem on my right. I've also been sternly instructed NOT to run (or even walk) barefoot...especially on pavement. I think I've just made up my mind to definitely have some flip-flops waiting for me, after the swim.

Oh, btw...my bib# for the race is 1054!!

Ooops! One more question for the Naperville veterans out there. You've all said to try and take a swim in the water, if possible the day before the race. I'm not sure if that will be possible for me, as I have a fairly full schedule for Saturday. If I arrive early enough on race day...is it possible for me to test out the water sometime on race morning?? Even if it's just a quick swim? I'd like to see how I feel in the water without the wetsuit. Then...if I start to feel cold, I'll most likely decide to wear the wetsuit for the race. Do other people use this method in determining whether or not to wear a wetsuit? If I do opt to wear the suit, how difficult will it be to put on once I am wet?

Good question!  Yes, the pool will be open beforehand to do a swim warm-up.  There might not be a whole lot of overlap between when the pool is open, though, and when transition closes (meaning -- if you decide not to wear the wetsuit, you might have to leave it outside transition and if you have no one to watch it for you, hope that it doesn't get taken).

A lot of times I will pull my wetsuit on standing in shallow water -- especially at the beginning of the season when it's still not stretched out, that seems to help getting it on.  So - being wet and putting on the wetsuit won't be a problem.

Thank you again, Laura! Your advice has been invaluable!!! My hubby will be at the race with me, so having somebody hold onto my wetsuit if I opt not to wear it at the last minute, won't be an issue...thank goodness! And good to know that I shouldn't have any problems putting on the suit if I'm already wet.

Oh - and with the wetsuit - a little body glide (some people use Pam cooking spray!) will also help not only putting it on, but definitely help in getting it off.

Good luck, everyone!  Remember - above all else - HAVE FUN out there!

I'll be in wave 16, sportin' number 118 and the remains of a BT tattoo on my calf.

I'll be in wave 13 with number 1739. I know several of the swim buddies so my nerves are calming a bit. Good luck to everyone.

Well the rain didn't wait but after the 1 hour delay it turned into a beautiful day!
I hope everyone had a great race.

For me I was extremely pleased. I almost achieved my goal time of under 1 hour 25 min, got 1:25:07 pretty darn close. Came in 9/207 age group. 94/1920 overall. Not a bad race!
The best thing is that I really improved on my swim from last year. I've worked on my stroke all year, even took a swimming class and the hard work showed not only in my swim time, 11:28, but in the fact that I didn't "freak" in the swim.
A great way for me to begin the season.

So, first timers, are you hooked?

That was fun.

I had 3 goals. 1. Do not drown, 2. Don't take anyone out in the transition area and 3. Run across the finish. Thankfully I achieved all three. My swim time was 10 minutes better then I thought (15 mins instead of 25), my bike time was 10 minutes better then I thought (50 mins instead of 1 hour) and I ran probably 2 of the 3 .1 miles. I gave it all I had to run across the finish, but I did and it felt great.

And I have to give a "shout out" to the swim buddies. I knew I would need some extra encouragement and my swim buddy did just that. My husband asked if chatting during the swim was in the training websites I spent lots of time on. Funny guy.

And the kids cheering us on during the run and having their hands out for a high five was so cool. That (and my 6 yr old running a small bit with my on the grass along Aurora Ave) just pulled whatever reserve engry I had stored and helped my run through the finish.

Hi everyone! What a great race today! It was way more fun than I thought it would be...and also not as difficult as I had expected. I didn't feel that tired right afterwards...that is, until I got home...where I promptly took a 3-hour nap!

Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea what my finishing time was...because I never even looked up at the time clock as I crossed the line! I've tried checking the website, but as of yet...I don't see any results. Does anyone know when the results will be posted? My hubby says that he thinks I finished around the 1hr, 30min mark...but he's not sure. How did you get your finishing times/splits, jtcats?

If you go to "confirm your entry" you can look up your race times. If you go to "results" they aren't there yet. Just an FYI.

Yes, what a great day. I was nervous it was going to be cancelled with the lightening, but it cleared up and was beautiful!

Oh...very cool...thanks!!! So my results were:

Time: 1:31:17
Swim: 12:45
T1: 5:19
Bike: 43.24
T2: 2:45
Run: 27:07
Overall place: 282/1919
Division place: 50/339

YIKES!!! I did better than I thought I did! I sure hope those times are accurate...because I never was able to crack 18 minutes in my training swims! To drop almost 6 minutes on my swim, seems impossible...or at the very least, unlikely. The bike time seems to be on target...but my run time seems off, too. I've never EVER run a sub-28 minute 5k IN MY LIFE! Plus with my foot hurting...I cannot fathom I how I could have run a 27:07...it blows my mind!

My swim was horrendous. I started hyperventilating. Even with that, i finished faster than I ever have finished that distance! The bike was probably the best leg and then the run was 98% walking.

I had 3 goals:
1. Finish...check!
2. Not finish last...check!
3. Run across the finish line...check!

As a side not, Valerie from the swim buddies rocks! And so do all of you ladies

Congrats, everyone!!!  I am SO glad to hear that it was a great experience for all of you... and y'all had some really smokin' times there, too!!  Crazy weather, eh?  Once all those storms moved through, though, it was a beautiful day to race.

My day was a bit of a mixed bag... swim was AWESOME (unusual for me!), bike was fine and run sucked (again - unusual - I LOVE the run...).  But - great fun to be out there.  This is one of my favorite races!

Whew, mission accomplished! My goal was to finish under 2 hours and I came in at 1:53, so I did it.
It was an amazing race- really well supported. I absolutely need to get a new bike though. My mountain bike decided to be super cranky and it felt like I was braking the entire ride. So, it's time to bite the bullet and get a road bike before my next one.
Does anyone else have any other tris planned in the area this year? I'm thinking Wauconda in July, but if anyone has a race they recommend, I'm all ears.
See all of you next year!

Congrats on your race!  Great feeling, isn't it?!

I love love LOVE the Pleasant Prairie triathlon in August.  They have all sorts of options -- sprint, duathlon and Olympic distance.  Race venue is in Pleasant Prairie, WI (literally, just over the IL border off I-94).  The swim is in a small, clean lake, the bike is rolling hills but nothing too difficult and the run is FLAT (though no shade).  Same venue as the Danskin tri in July, actually.  Race is very well run, typically has a great goody bag.  Highly recommended.

I second the Pleasant Prairie recommendation. Very nice race and well run.
You do have to rack your bike the day before though, so keep that in mind.

Someone else suggested this one to me and I was looking for a race in August. I think I will seriously consider this one.

Ok...this is really weird. According to my official race results, they have my swim time shown as 12:45. Something is very wrong here. My hubby says that the horn went off for my wave (11) at exactly 8:40...but he also says that I was STILL IN THE WATER at 9am!!! That is 20 minutes! How can they have my time being 12:45, if I was still in the water at 9??? He is 100% positive that I was still in the water at 9am, because he ran over to get a picture of me as I was running on the paved brick path on the way to T1...he said that pic was taken at approximately 9:05. Can somebody explain how this can be? Now I'm really bummed and feeling bad that I didn't swim the time they said I did. I had a feeling that something didn't seem right when I saw my race results. Could there have been something wrong with my timing chip? At what point, does the timing begin for the swim? When the horn blows? Or was there a timing mat that we stepped on in the water? Somebody please help me sort this out! This has been bugging me ever since I found out my time. I simply cannot get past the fact that I managed to shave nearly 5 whole minutes off my swim time in a matter of 2 days. My last practice swim was the Friday before the race, and it was my fastest 750m I've ever done at 17:38. This just doesn't make any sense to me. The other weird thing is...my overall time (1:31:17) does seem to be right, because my hubby said that I crossed the finished line right around 10:10am...which would be roughly an hour and a half after I had started at 8:40.

And before anyone asks...no, I was not wearing a stopwatch during the race...my fault, I know.

Linda - where you look up your results, there should be a "Contact us" link in the upper left hand corner -- email them with your question and see what they have to say.  Sometimes things get kind of mixed up with results.

Thanks, Laura. There was a link titled "questions about results"...so I clicked on it. I filled out the form with my information and question, so hopefully...somebody will be able to explain what the heck went wrong with my swim split. It's a little frustrating (not to mention disappointing) knowing that you didn't swim the time that they have listed. I'd just like to know what my REAL swim time was. Like I said in my previous post, my overall finishing time does appear to be correct, based on the fact that my husband remembers me crossing the finish line at roughly 10:10am, which puts me at right around the 1 hour, 30 minute mark...so it's close enough for me. But that swim time was just too far off, and I know I won't be satisfied until I find out what the reasoning behind it was.
