Total Time = 1h 59m
Overall Rank = 317/800
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 11/33
Pre-race routine:

woke up and ate oatmeal and bananas. My biggest issue has been cramping.
I drank tons of water the day before and drank gatorade and water the morning of.
Event warmup:

rode my bike up some hills and swam a little. Water was cold but not as cold as Terre Haute 3 years ago.
Swim
  • 12m 14s
  • 604 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

I stood towards the back and far left. I started slow, trying to catch a pace. I noticed I caught up to the lead group and drafted. The last 200 meters a kicked it up. I still had a lot of energy. I was 3rd out of the water from my wave. Oh I accidentlly hit someone and my watched stop recording my time. Ok I may have also climbed over some people too.
Then there was this guy doing a backstroke in the first 200 meters, he deservered to get smacked but I didn't. I just swam around him. I notice my HR was where I wanted to be and my race plan was on.
What would you do differently?:

maybe push a little harder
Transition 1
  • 03m 39s
Comments:

I normally leave my shoes on the bike but since there was a big hill to start I decided to put them on in T1

Bike
  • 1h 05m
  • 16.8 miles
  • 15.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Most of the people I beat on the swim had caught up to me on the bike, oh well. When will the moutain people learn. They were suffering big time on the hills, some were walking. This was not a race for mountain bikes. Oh yeah finally was able to pee on the bike. I had heard some of my tri friends talk about peeing on the bike. I thought it was gross but then I needed to pee so I knew it was a necessary evil. Maybe I will pay my kids to wash my bike. My HR was high on the bike. I could not control my HR on the hills. They were a challenge. On the flats I would bring my HR down.
What would you do differently?:

I used my 404 Zipps and they would vibrate going downhill at 50mph.
I think I will use the mavics next year
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

I kicked butt on T2
What would you do differently?:

Run
  • 36m 57s
  • 4.3 miles
  • 08m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Knee was sore the night before so I did not know how I would do down hill.
I slowed myself a little going downhill. I was able to catch up to some of bikers that past me. 1st 2 miles I kept my HR in Z4. After mile 2 I ran a little harder and HR was in low Z5. After mile 3 I started to go all out in high Z5.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder.
Post race
Warm down:

"So I may have climbed over some people..."

So you're one of those people in the water??  Hopefully I don't do the same races as you!!

You peed 4 times before the race, once during the swim, and again on the bike.  This was just a sprint ... right?

On the swim you "accidently" hit someone, you "may" have climbed over some people and there was a guy who "deserved" to get smacked but you spared him.  When you say most of the people you "beat" in the swim caught up with you on the bike ... did you mean swam faster than or physically manhandled?  Then on the run, you caught up with the people who passed you on the bike ... were these the same people you hit and climbed over in the swim?

You want to go back next year ... I'm assuming you have something to settle.

Most entertaining race report I've read in a long time!
