Pre-race routine:

Slept surprisingly well last night for a change. Woke up at 4:30. Normal routine. Bagel with PB. Banana. Coffee for the road.
Event warmup:

Went for a short run, just over the start of the run course out to where it meets the main road. Since it goes through a field, I was scouting for holes more than anything else. Got into my wetsuit. Probably about 150 meter warmup.

Comments:

Started pretty far up in my wave. I rather enjoy the contact in a swim start now, plus I wanted to see if I've made any progress (and waiting 15 seconds to swim off the back of everyone's heels doesn't allow me to do so). I was sort of in no man's land after the first turn. A group had gotten off to the front, and after I turned I could see a large pack about behind me, but I was pretty much on my own. Found a good draft at about the midway point of the swim. Some guy came across from my right, and I never saw him until we ran into each other. I tried to get by him, but couldn't, so I just settled in on his feet. Was good until the next turn to head back for shore. I had a great turn, he did not. So I got inside, then he turned to far and swam back across me. I momentarily pulled up and then couldn't quite get back on. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

I'm working on it. ;)

Comments:

Decent T1 since it involves a wetsuit. Got caught a bit on my right leg but not too bad. No real issues to speak of.

Comments:

Tough ride for me. I really went all out last week at VA Run, and didn't recover very well this week (at least not "smart"). It's a challenging, rolling course. Never flat. Spending most of my time on the WOD doesn't do much for this course. Was passed by a guy at about 5 miles. He never got out of sight though for the rest of the course. (wasn't in my AG though). Probably passed 10-15 people. Again, I was really on my own for most of the course.
What would you do differently?:

I just need more time on hills. I think I rode it pretty well, all things considered.
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

This is the part that sucks. T2 was pretty empty when I came in. Couldn't have been more than 15-20 bikes. I knew my rack was almost at the end on the left. So I was on my way up, getting close, saw a TYR bag, thought it was my spot, started to go up that row and it wasn't mine. So I turned back, checked the numbers on the rack, got confused, took a few steps back in the opposite direction (wrong way) before turning again and finding where I wanted to be. Struggled getting into my right shoe.

Comments:

Brutal run (as NL likes to describe it). Actually, I like the run. Mostly because I like running. I had no one to use as a rabbit, which sort of sucked. Even the guy that I almost caught was pretty much out of reach until the very end. When I saw them on the first "out and back" hill, he was with two other guys and they had to be a good quarter mile ahead, if not more. A few guys had come out of T2 close behind, but within the first half mile I'd put enough distance to know they weren't a concern. Just kept my form and pushed along, continued to feel stronger the more I ran.
What would you do differently?:

I'm just annoyed that I didn't catch the dude. Same friggin' thing happened to me at Kinetic.
Post race
Warm down:

The usual. Snacks and water. Packed everything up and into my car in case it started raining, then hung out for awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Raced hard last weekend and didn't play it very smart this week, but I can't make that an excuse.

that's a great swim for you!!!  Hey, I'd be happy catching one person on the run.  You want hills, you know where to come...

I will leave alone the statement that you "rather enjoy the contact on the swim."

Nice race.  If it makes you feel better, I'm pissed that I didn't catch the guy ahead of me in my race today for 166th in my AG.

Bummer about the finish.  Everyone is always so complimentary about Setup events but I'm not a big fan.   I was hoping to see some pictures of your transition area.  Congratulations on a good race.

Nice race.

The swim is coming along nicely and you had another great run split. Looking at the results, it looks like a lot of people had slower times than they normally would have on the bike.

Nice race!! Awesome run. You should feel pretty good about that swim, too, especially after your disappointment at Kinetic.
