Memphis, Tennessee
United States
Start 2 Finish, Inc.
Total Time = 2h 50m 36s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = F30-34
Age Group Rank = 36/74
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:15am, had a cup of coffee, slim-fast, and a banana. Time trial start at 7:50.
Event warmup:

We got down to the water just as they told everyone it was time to get out... so no practice swim. No biggie.
Swim
  • 28m 1s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

race number was 218, so I was in the water fairly quick. It wasn't too cold, but I'm not sure if I could've done it without a wetsuit. The first 1/3 of the swim, I couldn't keep in a straight line. I kept veering off to the right, even when I aimed left. I was worried that I was swimming a bunch of extra yardage! After the turn at the buoy, it was much easier. I didn't even look ahead to site - I just made sure I stayed next to the line of swimmers on my right (I could also see the rope marking the course). After the next turn, the water got chopping and I starting veering off course again, but not as bad as the last time. Everytime I looked up to see where I was, I'd get a mouthfull of water. I saw the finish line, and thought it felt like the quickest open water swim ever.
Transition 1
  • 04m 8s
Comments:

Had lots of trouble getting the wetsuit off my lower legs and ankles. I HATE that thing!
What would you do differently?:

No wetsuit
Bike
  • 1h 19m 15s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.81 mile/hr
Comments:

I tried to keep my heartrate at 165bpm the entire ride. The course was easier on me than most of my hilly training rides. We had some wind, but I've had a lot of practice with wind gusts lately, so it didn't phase me at all;)

I expected to be on the bike for at least 1.5 hours, so when I saw we were back at the park, I couldn't believe the bike segment was over! It happened so quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on speed!
Transition 2
  • 03m 32s
What would you do differently?:

I thought I was quick during T2, but apparently not. I fixed my ponytail, put on my cap and race belt while running, so I'm not sure what to do differently.
Run
  • 55m 42s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

First 3 miles, I kept my HR around 175.
Miles 3-5 was 180BPM
The last 1.2 was 185 and TOUGH. I was worried I wouldn't make it. I pushed it HARD and it seemed like the finish line would never come.Since I knew the course was hilly, my goal was to have sub-10 minute miles. I was estatic to see 8:59 as my average!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of walking

What limited your ability to perform faster:

speed on bike

Event comments:

Best post-race food ever! Nice expo too.

You killed it! Way to go. Your work ethic paid some big dividends, less than 9 minute miles and 18.81 mph on the bike - Super stong!

Congratulations on a great race-- nice consistency across all events! We actually finished within a minute of each other overall. Perhaps we'll see you out there next year?
