Age Group Rank = 145/211
Pre-race routine:

Up early, like 4:30. Got to the event site around 5:15, and I bet there were already 500 cars there. Glad I got there early. Ate powerbar and a bannana. had 1/2 a red Bull to wake up. Walked around and talked to people for the next hour and a half.
Event warmup:

Little running, maybe 1/2 mile. Saw a blur go by, it was Macca warming up. He's fast.
Swim

  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Cold water. Mass start was pretty physical. More bumping than usual. Started in the middle, but had to swim through a lot more than you'd think. Had to stop twice because so many people were jammed in front of me. Overall good swim, but my feet were cold and almost numb when I was done. East course to swim, sighting was really easy. The buoys were spaced at a distance that made it easy to see the next few at the same time, a big bonus.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Comfortable swim. Good pace for me, and I had plenty of energy left.
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

Slow transition. Wetsuit stuck a little, and my feet were numb. I had to walk a little with the bike instead of running to get the feeling back in my feet.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Comments:

Good bike on a really tough course. I really need to ride more, but I just don't have the time for long rides. Got out to do this course 5 or 6 times in the weeks before, and that really helped the hills and gearing. My bike computer crapped out at some point, and I knew I was mcuh further along than it showed.
One comical part, everytime there was a bump, the riders knew it because of all the yellow poof thingies from the aerodrink holders lying on the road. The second bump, I had to laugh out loud.
I tried to hammer the flats, build speed for the uphill parts on the downhills, and go as fast as I could based on the riders arounf me on the downhills.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more. Longer and more often.
Transition 2
  • 02m 26s
Comments:

Good. Not great, but good.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.

Comments:

As soon as I got off the bike, my right quad started to hurt. I figured it might loosen up, not so much. I walked most of the big hills hoping to stretch out the leg before it fully cramped up, but it hurt more to walk than to run. So, I kept going. What a wonderful run, water or gatorade every mile, lots of spectators in the neighborhoods cheering, and great scenery in the area. Although it hurt, it was probably one of the more enjoyable runs I've every done.
Everyone in the Annapolis tri Club had their race jerseys on, and everybody cheered each other on as we passed. Very cool. There was a little cheering on the bike, but not like the run. Excellent experience.
Below average result, but very fun.
What would you do differently?:

I think the bad left knee and weak left leg causes me to over-compensate with the right leg when i go hard on the bike. I think I need to do some weight training on the legs to be more ready for the run for future races.
Post race
Warm down:

Look for the food. Up on a hill. Sick joke. But, the ATC club tent had most excellent food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of bike training and imbalances in my legs.

Event comments:

The first race I've done with a pro field. Macca, Desire Ficker, Go Jessie, and others. Very cool to see the pro field swim ahead of us. Alomst surreal to see how fass they are. Got to see them pass us on the bike going the opposite direction. Lots of whoosh, whoosh sounds. Very cool to see how interactive and friendly they are with average people at these races.
What a well run race. Course was nicely laid out and lots of helpful volunteers. Great to see the neighborhoods in the erea embrace the participants and come out to cheer for them.
As well run as a race can be. Will make this a yearly right of spring.

Great race and race report. We had very similar experiences all around. I agree, this is a very well run race and a challenging but fan friendly course.

Nice work!
