OK - maps are up. I printed them and am going to go drive them this morning. I will ride the bike course on Sunday for a good elevation map.  I WILL NOT run the run courses - cause it's just to damn far .  I wil get elevation readings on my bike so we can have those too.  I would guess I will have all of this posted by Sunday afternoon.

BTW - things are looking better in Des Moines - the threatened levee was contained and the water has crested.  If we can escape any rain for the next 5 to 7 days - we should be in relief mode.  Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are not so lucky.  Continue to pray for those folks, please.

That is good news!  I and many others continue to keep the folks in the area in our prayers.

I went house hunting today (I'm moving from NE to PA)

anyway, I met my Realtor at Starbucks and at the Starbucks there was a rack of newspapers

On the front page of the New York Times was a full story about Cedar Rapids - it was really weird to see that

Hey all.  I rode the bike route and ran the 5k this morning.  I have to say that the bike route is not bad, all things considerd.  It is very fast and it i kind of fun becuase there are lots of fun turns.  Most of the roads are fairly new construction, as this is a newly developed area.  Some of the streets really need to be cleaned up as they have sand and dirt where they could cause trouble, but I was assured by some of the race staff that was out at the site that they planned on cleaning them at least 3 times before race day.

The 5K is also a good route that has a couple of uphills long with those same downhills.

I am going to take the posted maps and make notes on them with Adobe - then save the PDF's to my website.  I will put a link in my next post so you can link directly to them.  I will have to do that later, though, because my wife wants to go look at furniture and I don't want to sleep on the couch for the next week.

I checked out the area as well. I would say that the run route is very hilly, much more so than the original run route through downtown. The stretch along EP True from approximately mile 1-3, and part of the 6th mile, is pretty flat, but everywhere else is going to seem like constant ups and downs. My knee is not happy about this, but that's what naproxen is for, right?

I haven't gone on the bike route yet, but from memory there are hills leaving Southwoods and going over I-35, and then it's pretty flat through the Jordan Creek area and the mostly rural area to the south of there. Is that pretty close to your experience?

I'd say the new run is hillier than the original, but the new bike may be flatter. none of the hills on the new bike are comparable to Grand Ave. on the original course.

OK - I have posted the maps of the bike and the run with my notes on them.  They were too big to post on BT - so I posted them to my web site.

www.triathlonsfortransplants.com

Go to the events tab and then scroll to the bottom and there are links to download both maps.  Questions?  Ask away.

Of course - you could just go to these links:

Run : http://www.triathlonsfortransplants.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/hyveerun.pdf

I'm part of a large group from Hormel Foods headed down to West Des Moines for the Hy-Vee "dry tri" aka duathalon. Aside from sponsoring parts of the race and providing some of the post-race events/food, we also have about 80 Hormel employees/family members headed down to race. While most are taking part in team events, we have about 30 racing as individuals (including myself).

From what we've heard, the pre- and post-race activities are still 100% go. Sure, its dissappointing that the swim portion can't be held but it's still shaping up to be a great event and for most of us its our first duathlon. From what I've heard the race oranizers/Hy-Vee are really focusing on making the event great for the age groupers given the change in venue/scope.

I hope anyone scanning these boards for feedback on the race / evaluating whether to participate or spectate makes it down. All of our individuals and teams are still slated to race. Sure its not what we anticipated, but I hope they give the race organization the benefit of the doubt that it will be worth it. Plus, spending a few bucks in downtown Des Moines for dinner/lodging (all the hotels and restaurants in downtown are still 100% functional from what I've heard) is a small step to getting that city back to normal.

That's an awesome point.  Downtown is fully functional and there is no danger of flooding there at all.  From Friday evening when I went home from work to this afternoon when I came home - The fDes Moines river had fallen 4 feet.  At that rate, by the weeknd, the river should be on it's way back to normal.  That doesn't solve the e coli issue in the water, but it would not only lift the community n revenue, but in spirit as well.  We could use a good party!

You guys have probably already all figured this out, but the updated race information is available to upload into your training logs

I deleted the original tri and then added the new race as a duathlon.

I'm glad that you got that done - since they might change it again.

They are talking about an outside possibility of making it a tri again.  They will make a decision (based on bacteria levels and the availablity of transition areas) on Thursday for age groupers and by the 5PM race meeting on Friday for Elites.  I love it when a plan comes together!

Wait - how do you delete a race?  I didn't know you could do that.

Wow, that would be really tough for them to do, considering all the setup they've already done at Southwoods. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if they could still make a tri happen, it just seems like you said, an outside possibility. Maybe we could all swim in the little pond by the school...

When you go into the race area from your training log there is an option under the race list to delete a race.

you select it from the drop down list on the left and then delete

I did figure out that it's better to delete the one you don't want first - the race name was the same and I couldn't figure out which one was which

LOL!  Actually I had a dream that they had the swim in a giant inflatable pool! - it was really more of a nightmare

OMG are you kidding me?  I really hope they decide early tomorrow as I leave tomorrow afternoon for my flight to Iowa.  I already had it in my head that I did not have to pack my wetsuit.  Really don't want to drag it along just in case.  Sigh........

Plus I hate swimming.  A DU was my chance to shine! Hahahahah!

The rumors have been flying around the DM crowd for a few days now. Its a possibility but no telling how probable. The steam behind the rumor mainly comes from an email that went out to the safety kayakers, from a Hy Vee corp rep basically saying that Raccoon River park was being monitored and tested for water quality, and to be prepared if the decision was made to swim.

Unbelievable.  So now it's going to be a point to point tri?  Transition in 2 different places?

Well, I am looking at the map, and even though the lake and the Jr Hi are close to each other, they are not close enough.  So I am hoping they move the transition location TO the lake (this would be best).  We could still have the big finish at the school, but to have a Swim to bike transition area, and a sperate bike to run transition area is just a pain in the butt for not only the athletes, but for spectators as well.  Oh well.....and this point the whole thing is completely wonky, so I guess we just need to stay tuned and let them figure it out and let us know.  Guess I'll be packing my wet suit now. :-(

So you have been whining about the fact that it's a Du for a week and now that it's back to a Tri you're not doing it? Wow.
