Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Strong swim: I was a competitive swimmer. Weak run: My body rejects it. If it's not lower leg pain that no one can figure out how to get rid of, it's IT band issues, painful side cramps, or GI issues. Me and running don't mix. |

Expert 3974 MA | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? I'm still beginning, but from what I can see I have bike power, but swim technique needs real work. Run is middle ground in that it's all dependent on conditioning so far. I need time in the water in the worst way so I can work out a smooth stroke rhythm. |

Strength: Swim, former D1 College Swimmer Close second strength: Bike, I just groove on the bike, really enjoy it and do well in my races in the bike segment Weakness: Run. I was on Cross Country in HS, but the run is the hardest for me. I am in a run focus right now |

Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? This is all relative, but my strongest leg is the swim and my weakest is the bike. Reasons: Swim - swimming is mostly technique. I have good technique as I was taught well at an early age, and though I never raced competitively, I swam a lot, so it all came back really easily. Plus, I'm just comfortable in the water - we spent every day, every summer of my childhood at the town pool, vacationed at the beach from the time I was 2, etc. I like the water. So I don't get the panics in the water that a lot of people experience. And since I'm confident in my abilities, that helps overall. Bike - lack of experience and fear of hill descents. Hills slow me down. And lack of muscle power from not having lots of experience keeps me from sustaining high speeds for long periods of time, or even reaching high speeds in some cases. |

Master 2411 Goodyear, AZ | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Weakness= swim. I never learned how to swim properly as a kid, it was like starting from scratch. I struggled alone for 1.5 years and just started to get some group swimming/coaching last month. It already made a difference. i just had my best OWS ever in a race last weekend. Strongest is run. I've always loved to run, this is my longest stretch of being uninjured and I've improved my run. Training for a marathon has helped |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Strong cyclist...why? I like it...do I like it because I'm realtively good at it. Or do I just like it? I rode a lot as a kid and even went on a week bike trip riding 500 miles when I was 13 or 14. I think my genetics/muscle make up from being a competitive figure skater as a kids helps. If I don't ride I get cranky. If we move to another part of the country it will only be some place warmer than where I live so I can ride outside every day. I hope to ride for the rest of my life doing all sorts of fun adventures on my bikes. Poor Swimmer Why? As much as I try my technique is poor even after 4 winters of various lessons from 4 different coaches. It frustrates me to work and work at it and get no better other than being able to go longer.

Master 2299 New York | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Strong swim - swam competitively for a long time. I have pretty good form, and have put in a lot of time in the pool. Fair to decently strong run - in Olys & shorter I can generally run <6:45/mile. Weak-ish bike. Not sure why - I put in what I think is a lot of time (~55% of total time), but I generally hover at or just under 20mph on anything other than a pancake flat course. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Strengh - swim because I have a competitive swimming background. Learned technique at a very young age, was coached for many years. Weakness - bike because I had never ridden a bike (except a little kids bike) until three years ago. Inexperience, lack of skills, thus lack of enjoyment. I'm getting there though. |

Sneaky Slow 8694 Herndon, VA, | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? I'm not strong on anything. I am the least weak on the run. I am by far the weakest on the swim, because I consistently panic in OWS races. If I swam in races like I did during workouts, I'd be MOP. But I don't. So I am BOBOP on the swim in races. |

Expert 1187 Ontario | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? I haven't been able to answer this question yet. I seem to be relatively equal in all three. Coming into tri with a 10 year running background I assumed running would be my strength. Started swimming in Oct 2006 with some group lessons and picked up fairly good technique. Started biking in March 2007. In my first tri season (2007) I placed pretty evenly in all 3 disciplines in every race. My feeling is that biking will be my strength and swimming will always be my weakness simply because the inconvenience of getting to the pool to train is a limiter. I'm only coming into my second season, after a few more years of consistent training I should be able to identify my true strength (and weakness). Edit: I voted strong run/ weak bike only because I have lots of room for improvement on the bike and I have lots of running fitness and experience from years of running. Veteran 166 Douglas County | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? I'm a moderately strong swimmer and cyclist (love the open water), but I'm just total crap at running. I'd never run a mile in my life before last June, and my legs have a lot of trouble staying injury-free. I don't find it to be particularly pleasurable, either, so it's always a real challenge for me to improve! |

Extreme Veteran 416 Mercer Island, WA | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Well, we shall see what actually happens after my first race on Monday, but here is how I self-assess: Strong swimmer - I raced in high school and some college (but mostly focused on diving in college) WEAK biker - I was intimidated to go on the open road and don't do it that much because I'm not good at it. Moderate/strong runner - I have been racing for a few years! |

Elite 2527 Armpit of Ontario | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Cycling: I'm weaker than I'd like to be because I just don't get out enough. Running: I suck at running. With each passing year I'm feeling it more, and carrying a few extra pounds around doesn't make it any easier. I feel like a very old man after an easy 10k. Swimming: I do duathlons. Fooling around in the water with the kids when they were younger was fun; training and trying to improve saps every atom of fun out of it. Swimming is for fish. Why am I even here?

Veteran 184 San Diego, CA | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Strong Swimmer : Ex-National Level Competitor. Weak Runner : At 6’7” and 260 the run just kills me.
I start out in the very front coming out of the water, I lose some ground to the better cyclists, and survive the run ( it's ugly but it gets done ). Getting better all the time though. Lots of great help here. Thanks all. Edited by griepsma 2008-05-22 12:15 PM |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Strong runner (MOFOP to FOMOP) -- 10 years of running history, incl. HS competition from 1/2 mile to x-country. Before starting cross training early last year, I was running seven days/40 miles a week. Shaky cyclist (FOBOP at best so far) -- Used to bike alot in teen years, but didn't really get on a bike again for almost 30 years. Only started cross training on the bike in Jan. 2007 and haven't really had a particularly good bike to work with up to now. My 2nd Oly (1st tri on my new and better roadie) coming up in late June will be a real test--I've been working much harder on the bike since I finished my marathon on Mar. 2. I'm a decent swimmer with a HS competition background (30+ yrs ago). I hadn't been in the pool for a long time (started training 13 mos. ago) and only really have time for one swim session a week. If I trained more, I'd be close to my run proficiency on the swim--as it is, I settle for being FOMOP-ish due to not training much. Edited by tcovert 2008-05-22 12:17 PM |

Extreme Veteran 597 Fairfax | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Strongest - Swimming I swam in HS and college (DIII), so I have swimming ingrained into my bones. Weakest - Running I never really could run long distances, played lacrosse growing up so short sprints were all I had to focus on. Seeing solid gains in my runs over the past 3-4 months, started out running 8:15/mile and am down to 7:30/mile and falling. Also, increased my mileage from 2-3 miles to 5-6 miles per day 4x a week. |

Veteran 458 Minnesota | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? I am a pretty good runner for a guy my size (195 lbs). I did well in HS track and enjoyed the running during PT in the Army. I think I have some natural talent, enjoy it and have been doing it on some level for over 15 years. My biking is getting close. I think I might be a better biker than runner if I put in the same time and effort. I got into mt. biking a few years before I started doing triathlons and I think that helped. Swimming is clearly my weakest leg. While I have been around water my whole life, I have never really had any formal training, except some swimming lessons in 1st and 2nd grade. My community has limited pool facilities and access, which makes it very difficult with my work/kid schedule. |

Veteran 193 | Subject: RE: Where are your strengths and weaknesses? Strong: Run Weak: Swim In between: Bike I was a world-class couch potato for about two decades after high school, ultimately reaching a thoroughly doughy state at 175 lbs. (on a 5' 8" frame). In September '06 I started running, and I'm still doing it. I got my trusty hybrid bike last summer, and I started swimming this February. I've been able to move in the water since I was a kid, but it was purely splashin' and thrashin'. I can now actually swim with my head in the water, with alternate breathing, even. I hope that as I spend more time on the bike and in the pool the differences will level out, but I suspect I'll always be most comfortable with the run. |
