Pre-race routine:

Flew in Friday after work. Felt tired and run down all week. Never really snapped out of it. Slept poorly the night before. Woke up at 4:15 feeling sick in my lungs, and achy all over. Went for a jog around the block for 10 min. Went potty. Ate 3 hardboiled eggs and ~10 almonds while we drove to the race site. Drank some water.
Got set up. Never quite felt mentally ready. Talked to Sara before. Was a bit worried about my knee holding up, but she put my mind at ease.
Event warmup:

Swam for about 10 min, with a few sprints to warm up.
Swim
  • 31m 53s
  • 1900 meters
  • 01m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

The cannon went and the first thing that popped into my head was "holy crap, I'm not ready". Got kicked alot, pushed around. Felt very out of it for first lap. Checked my watch as I finished the first lap, and made it my goal to negative split. Second lap I felt a bit better, but felt like that edge was missing. Didn't feel like I swam as hard as I could have.
Was shocked when I got out of the water and they told me I was the 5th female.

"5th out of the water"
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Felt a bit fumbly through transition. Had to sit down twice to get the job done. I was on a bit of a hill, and kept almost falling over.
Bike
  • 2h 47m 16s
  • 88 kms
  • 31.57 km/hr
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Was shocked at how good my legs felt coming off the bike. Heard Steve King announce me coming in, followed by, "She's 27 minutes behind the lead female...". Nice.
Had Sara there to run with me for a tiny bit. She gave me the update on the girls ahead of me....only a few minutes at that point. It was like she knew EXACTLY what to tell me to get me going...that I was running stronger than them, and that they were only a few minutes ahead.
Run
  • 1h 52m 9s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 05m 19s  min/km
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in the lake. Drank a recovery shake. Talk to Sara and hubby and in-laws. Hubby missed the finish cuz he was in the bathroom. I had told him on a good day, I might finish around 5:20. Lol.

Stuck around for the awards, which was fun, cuz they made a pretty big deal out of it.

Drank water til HR settled. Packed 3 bottles of perp on bike, and started on that after 15 min. took a bite or 2 of snickers bar in first hour, polished it off in hour 2. Ave HR was 152. VERY VERY low. In past HIMs, I've averaged around 163-165. RPE was 10. I literally felt like I was empty. I felt cold, achy, sick, coughy. HR kept dropping, so I switched my garmin to a different screen, cuz it was psyching me out. Learned its best to NOT turn head to side when wearing my new aero helmet. :) Gave it everything i had, but felt like on a good day, I'd have much more to give. Not my best psychological performance.

I believed for the first part of the run that Sara was right, I could totally catch those girls if I just ran my pace. Soon my thoughts changed to just keeping pace, and eventually to just hanging on. At around the 12-15k mark, I realized that I probably didn't have it in me to dig deep enough to catch the girls ahead of me, and that I was also probably not going to be caught. I had been running side-by-side with this guy for almost the whole run, and at that point he got away from me. I started thinking about what my finish time would look like (which tells me that I wasn't pushing hard enough mentally), and I was pleasantly surprised, considering how near-death I'd felt. I managed to hang on. I also managed to pee while running, a first for me! I felt like I gave the race all I could on that day, but on a good day, I could give so much more. Again, a bit disappointed with the psychological side of the race.

Amazing that on a bad day you beat what you thought you could do on a good one!

Congrats on all the energy and dedication you put into it, it paid off.  A bit sad that you weren't feeling 100% but it happens.  You didn't stop and you gave what your body could at the time.  Be proud!

And one last thing, amazing how IM training/racing can bring someone to pee on him/herself!  Congrats for that too, especially while running! LOL.

Great Race Carrie,   Snickers and Hardboiled eggs.  Super food!   And peeing on the run?  I thought that was only on bikes...

Awesome finish, sooooo fast.  Excellent.

Yeah. I never really mention that in my race report, but its a great race. Beautiful course, well organized, good people. The ONLY drawback was that its pretty inconvenient to get to, especially with spectators, since they don't allow parking at the venue. You have to drive past the venue, to get to the shuttle, which only ran certain hours. Other than that, I'd highly recommend it.
