Pre-race routine:

stayed at IL's house. slept like crap. ate yogurt and strawberries.
Event warmup:

wandered around, ran into people I knew, chatted. thought about getting in the pool.. and then decided not to. Did a few skips and side skips to open up my tight hip joints.
Swim
  • 05m 15s
  • 250 yards
  • 02m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

well, apparently if I stand around in a really warm humid room for a while, I WILL have serious breathing problems by the time I get to actually swim. seriously considered stopping, kept popping up at the ends of lanes to take giant gulping breaths. got passed by 2 people. probably w/out exaggeration the worst swim of my life.
What would you do differently?:

no clue, as I did take my inhaler before waiting for the start. I would have not had the problem outside, plus I would have been able to swim breaststroke for a minute to breathe w/out worrying about kicking people.
Transition 1
  • 03m 49s
Comments:

well, I walked to transition, and took giant raspy gulping breaths. this was NOT my fastest transition ever.
What would you do differently?:

new lungs?
Bike
  • 38m 43s
  • 10 miles
  • 15.50 mile/hr
Comments:

spent the first bit trying to catch my breath. finally felt better about halfway through, managed to kick it up for the second half.
What would you do differently?:

breathe. not lose my inhaler when I hit a pothole.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

again, super slow (no time for this, but probably two minutes at least. just didn't have the quick mindset... but that's one of the reasons I did this race, to get my brain back in that mode.
What would you do differently?:

hustle.
Run
  • 35m 52s
  • 3 miles
  • 11m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

why do RDs put water stops at the TOP of hills? ran the whole thing except a brief walk through the second water stop. This was my goal for this race, to be able to run the whole run. Course was short, probably was 2.9 according to people with garmins. take out my long transition and I'm happy with my time.
Post race
Warm down:

wandered around, drank my chocolate milk, volunteered at the kid's tri

What limited your ability to perform faster:

breathing issues, definitely.

Em, thanks so much for your help. I was mighty nervous and unsure of how to go about things, and you guys helped me tremendously. I hope that I can build my swim up to the point that my best effort in the water approaches your worst one.

Thanks again, and I hope to see you & Adam & Jake at other events.

One reason water stops are on top of a hill is to motivate you to get there, then you can rest at bit after "conquering" the hill.

Nice job on Sunday.  It's great seeing you and Adam.

Great job overcoming the "Attack of the Asthma!"  You sounded like a chain-smoker, so it was good you were able to keep going!  You're doing great.  Next time, take the dog on the run, I'm sure he could help your time, unless he stops to um.... (you know)

Hey Monica... nice job on a 'C' race!  Your 'below average' swim is  better than my best swim times.  Despite the breathing difficulties I think you did great !!  Every race is a learning experience and that's what the 'C' races are for.
