does anyone use nose plugs when swimming?  Ive thought that was a sign of weakness to use them like your admitting you cant hold your breath under water.  Im thinking of using one while doing my swim since im having a hard time with breathing through my mouth.  Any thoughts?

I did when I first started but got to where I did not need them except when I first started swimming in OW last year.  After a few swims I was okay.  This year OW has been giving me trouble espcially when it is cold.  With the water warming up I think I should be okay.

Personally I don't care if it made me look weak.  My goal is to get to the finish line as fast as possible.

For me I think it helped because for somereason I was getting water in my nose and caused me problems.

I breathe out through my nose when I swim, so I couldn't do that ..... but I've seen others use them.  You do whatever works best for you and gets you to the finish legally!!

I use one for pool swimming because the chlorine irritates my nose and sinuses. Open water swims do not present the problem. It really doesn't seem to affect my breathing at all during a swim, but it sure helps how I feel afterward.

I also use a noseclip due to allergies to chlorine and mold spores in the pool area. I don't even think about how silly or non-experienced I might look, since I am doing it for my health. I just started swimming in February and started out not using the noseclip, so I know I can swim without the noseclip. I really like leaving the pool after a workout being able to breathe because I am not all congested.

I have been thinking about using them.  I don't have allergies like others and it doesn't bother me but water seems to get trapped in my nose and decides to come out an hour or two later.  It is kind of disgusting when I am working and water just starts streaming out of my nose.

I use one, but do practice without it some just in case it would get kicked off during a race. Without it, I get water inmy nose and throat that bothers me for sometime after my swim.

You got to learn to blow your nose.

No offense meant, just sound advice.

I bought one and tried it, but stopped ussing it because I didn't like feeling like my nose was being held (semi-claustrophobic feeling, to me).  Who cares what people think.  If it works for you, do it.  If it doesn't, don't.

It's kind of like the guy you see at the race with a mountain bike and you get out of T1 ahead of him and you think, "see you later" and he blisters past you a mile down the course.  Who's laughing then?

I have been swimming for only a year and a half. About 6 months ago started having problems with severe congestion a couple hours after the pool.  Just started to use the nose plugs and the congestion has stopped.  I've had a hard time having to learn to breathe with the nose plugs.  I never realized how much I used my nose. It's taken me awhile to be able to swim anything more than 100 yards at a time. I was swimming a mile straight before the nose plugs. I was really hoping not to have to use them but the congestion was getting so bad that I was afraid I'd have to give up swimming.  I think I look like a dork but I am sooo glad that I can continue to swim.

I use one when I swim in a chlorinated pool as the chlorine really irritates my sinuses.  It certainly changes the way I breathe.

I don't use one during races or in open water swims.

Be sure you get one that stays on in the water.  I really like my silicone Speedo nose plug.  It says put pretty well while I'm swimming.

I only use nose clips in the open water swim (even though I can't stand them) b/c of ameobas in warm water. I use Speedos and they don't seem to come off like some other brands do in the water.

I learned how to really swim for my first triathlon, and I struggled with breathing. So I used nose clips. What a godsend. A few years later I did my first Ironman with noseclips. I wasn't the only person with them.

After that, I decided to wean myself from it. Took me a while, but now I have no need whatsoever.

So if you need noseclips, go right ahead.

sinus irritation here - seemed to start with just on specific pool

Tried a nose plug and feel kinda naked without it...

Got one on an elastic cord which goes round my head for races
