Subject: Bike Upgrade . . . future sale? Help :)
Hi. A question regarding bike upgrades and resale . . . .

I'd like to upgrade from Shimano 105 (everything) to Ultegra or Ultegra SL. I ride a Trek Equinox, but plan to buy a new bike this winter. I'd also like a new wheel set (404 Clydes, ideally), but I am not sure whether I should do either (or both) upgrades if I plan to sell the bike when I purchase a new one later in the year. I would keep the wheel set, so I guess the real question is whether it makes sense to make the Ultegra switch if I'm planning to sell the bike? Will it help with resale? If you had to choose, which would give you more bang for the buck: Wheels or the Ultegra upgrade?

It's a good chunk of change, either way, but I feel like any new bike upgrade will come with Ultegra or higher components anyway. As I write this I am realizing that I'm leaning toward going with the wheel set.

I love the bike, but it's a little on the small/cramped side. I bought a 58 (I liked the 'tight' feeling) but now feel better on, and would prefer, a bigger frame.

Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

-TJ

You touched on the main part in that your current bike is a little on the small side, so go for a bike that

a) fits you properly (get fitted) and feels comfortable.

b) go with what you can afford.

c) if you are really into tri's or even just cycling then go for the ultegra+ as you'll be getting the usage out of the bike...

My two cents Tongue out

(P.S.: How tall are you?)

upgrading a complete group to ULT is going to run 1k+. IMHO, its not going to help resale.

the one think you could do is buy the group now for your old bike. then when you want a new bike, only buy the frame and put the new group on it and the old group back on the old bike.

I wouldn't buy the upgraded gruppo if you plan to be replacing the frame in a relatively short period of time.  It won't increase resale of your old bike by much. If you plan to buy a frame later and switch them out, it will generally cost you more then if you bought the frame & components as a package.  Plus, there is the time or money invested in dissembling/rebuilding the bikes when it's time to switch them out.

The wheels, on the other hand, are worthwhile buying now.  Easy to switch out and can make a bigger difference in your ride (depending on what you had for old wheels, I guess).

Why not buy the bike that fits now and wheels this fall?  Seems if you have the money for wheels and ultegra, you could get  a very good bike that fits you now, and wheels later.  A bike that fits will benefit you more (Speed and comfort) than wheels ever will.

I may be missing something, but why would you upgrade all of your components, and then sell the bike? If you plan on selling the bike, I wouldnt upgrade anything.

Reselling bikes, you might get about half of what you paid.

Plus, for the cost of an Ultegra gruppo and 404's you could buy a seriously nice, complete new bike.

x2

Generally speaking, bikes have a horrible re-sale value.

I'd get the wheels, because you can use those on any bike (assuming you don't get a very high-end machine that comnes with equivalent wheels). Don't even think about upgrading the components--you won't see any real benefit and you'll lose mone in resale.

Only fix what's not working properly. Otherwise, don't upgrade anything you're not keping.

You'll never see the money you put into this bike unless you take it with you (wheels)

best answer so far. Buy the bike that fits, wheels and other stuff later.

Get the bike you want now.  Do not bother upgrading an older bike with the thought of selling it off.  You will simply NOT recoup your investment!  If you buy a new bike now, you will enjoy a full season ahead of your proposed schedule and can start saving up for that new 404 wheelset.

Thanks. I appreciate the info. I will hold off on the component upgrade and try to convince my wife re: the new bike. I'll also hold off on the wheels and start socking $$ away for those down the line. I really appreciate the insight and advice.

I love this site and the info provided. Very helpful ALWAYS!

Thanks, again!

No. You didn't miss anything at all. I was considering the upgrade, but I planned to sell the bike later in the year (winter '08) before next season. I was considering the upgrades for my remaining races this year. The component upgrade (minus the wheels) would be to get a little more from the resale transaction. You are also correct regarding the new bike vs. Ultegra/404's cost comparison. I can wait on the wheels and a new bike will take care of several issues at once.

Thanks again.

Thanks. I'm 6'-1" or 6'-2". I love the tri's and the cycling.

I appreciate the advice and insight.

Very good 'two cents'.
