Subject: Friel's TTB question

In Friel's Triathlon Training Bible - 2nd edition in the swim workout appendix B, there's a workout called E3 - Intensive Endurance Intervals.  It says:

Swim intervals that take 3 to 5 mins to complete in Zone 3, then recover 5 to 10% of the preceding time.  He gives an example:  5 x 400 m in 3:00, leaving every 3:20.

Is this right???  400m in 3 mins and stay in Zone 3?!?!  This has to be a typo.  The world record for the 400 relay is 3.08.  This just isn't impossible for a human being let alone staying in Zone 3.  Am I interpreting this wrong? What's he really mean here - 5 mins?  - Which is still insane.  Maybe the distance is screwed up?  5x200 in 3 mins leaving every 3:20 makes a little more sense.

I would guess it's the latter--distance is 200.  For a good swimmer (not me), this is probably reasonable.  It would take me 3:20 or 3:30 just to do the swim at a good clip and I'm not sure I'd still be in Zone 3 for 5 of them!

Im a little surprised it actually says Zone 3 as typically most the swim workouts I get from their site intensity is based on a variation of your TT pace +/- seconds based on the workout. Another thing to note is that NONE of the E3 workouts specify a distance but are all based on elapsed time. Here are 2 of the 4 E3 Workouts from the TB site:

WU: 5 minutes alternating slow-fast pacing. Play with different strokeswhile warming up.MS: 20-minute steady swim. Swim without stopping. Count your strokes on the first 25 of each 100. Are they staying constant?CD: 5 minutes very easy. Choice of strokes or floating on your back and sculling.Total: 30 minute
