The article gets you excited, that is for sure.  It will still be blazing hot, but definitely going to be a great race.  We can only hope for a full IM at some point in the future.

I too would like to see a more Atlanta accessible iron distance race as, given the relatively boring bike and run course, I cannot imagine racing in Panama City Beach again.  That said, it is an established and popular race site - both domestically and internationally (I could not believe how many German AG'ers there were last year).

I do not think that WTC will risk messing with that success given the number of locales that are still without an iron distance race (mid-Atlantic and Calironia comes to mind). If I were betting, I would say that Eagleman and/or Vineman become the next full distance IM branded races.

That is too bad as I'd like to see a full distance race in north Georgia that utilizes Six Gaps as the bike course

You can register now by using the coupon code.  That's only good for the 1st 200 registrants and expires after June 30th.  After that it's normal registration.  It's kinda confusing.

I just registered. I used the code and got the $10 off, but I think it would have let me register without it.

I'm registered.  I decided to go ahead and register even though it is so far away.  This is going to be a fun adventure.

Not to burst their marketing bubble, but most of the IM 70.3 races are not selling out.  It is not like the full IM registration craziness.  A few big ones do sell out - for example FL & Eagleman, but most do not.  It seems like the 70.3 races are becoming very local (for the most part) in their draw.  I did KS 70.3 earlier this month and they were taking registration the day before the race.  95% of the racers were from the states around KS.

Moral of the story - I would feel very comfortable not signing up for the race until next year. I could be completely wrong, so I put a disclaimer on the view.  It is just a gut feeling.  Also, I am not taking anything away from the event, just commenting on the signing up part.

Good point.  I went ahead and registered to give myself a goal and I happened to have the money at the time.  I agree that the chances of it selling out are not that high especially given that this is the first time here in Augusta.

Think James is right about the 70.3 becoming more local as they have nearly double the capacity of events available to the triathlon community.  That said, they are also soaking up participants from the independent race directors and making them more formal while putting their brand on them.

This is not a bad thing as the "Ironman" brand is a strong one that the WTC supports jealously with quality control and added experise.

I plan to do August next year as it is a "local" race that my kids can come to.

What hotels are close to the finish line/transition area?  Probably would not hurt to go ahead to secure a room via points in the upcoming months.

Yay- the course maps are posted!  Looks like the bike will be hilly and challenging- especially in the beginning.  I'll have to ride the course though to see.  I've ridden parts of it before but in the opposite direction, so it may be less hilly the other way- or I can only hope.

The run course will pretty much be PANCAKE FLAT.  Minimal shade though.

As far as hotels, the Marriot downtown is the closest to the TA and is the host hotel- so that would be the most convenient one.  I'd also recommend the Partridge Inn- it's not too far from downtown and is pretty nice:  http://www.partridgeinn.com/

Augusta is small and there are so many other hotels that aren't downtown but within a miles and would be convenient and probaly cheaper as well.  If any wants hotel recommendations shot me a PM!

Wow!  I can't believe that bike route.  As someone who lives right off of Hwy 278 I can tell you there is no way in hell I'm riding that route.  Not only is it hilly, it's a major artery for truck traffic.

I was surprised that they have the bike course on MAJOR roads.  I thought for sure it would be mostly backroads.  Sigh...if only I were the race director.

Im planning on doing this one to finish off the season next year. Starting with HIM Florida in May. Holding off a bit on registration as I just had a Cardiac Ablation to my heart yesterday. Doc said he's 85-90% sure its fixed, fingers crossed.
Taking July off to base train and recover (test out the ticker). Then planning on hitting it hard at PTC Sprint in Aug.
I see where we get a $112 rate at the Marriott downtown as of sept this year. That sounds like a good deal compare to $250-300 a night at Fort Wilderness at Di$ney.
I heard rumor the bike course might be a bit of a pill?
Still excited about it and looking forward to being there!!!
