Just found out, the will be a Ironman 70.3 in Augusta next year on Sept 27. Registration opens a month from today.

June 2, 2008 -- Today, Ironman, in conjunction with Premier Event Management, announces a new Ironman 70.3 Event scheduled for 2009 in the southeastern United States. Ironman 70.3 Augusta will take place in the classic southern city of Augusta, Georgia on Sunday, September 27, 2009 with a field limit of 2,000 athletes.

Premier Event Management, producers of the several major triathlons across the United States including the Nautica New York City Triathlon, Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens and the Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans, is excited to bring Ironman 70.3 to the city of Augusta. “The city of Augusta and its aggressive sports council has been simply fantastic to work with on the planning of this inaugural event,” said race director, Bill Burke of Premier Event Management.

Ironman 70.3 Augusta will offer athletes the unique opportunity to race in two states, as the cycling portion of this event will take athletes into the great state of South Carolina. Prior to the bike portion, athletes will swim a 1.2 mile point-to-point course in the Savannah River exiting at the Augusta Rowing Club Complex and the Augusta public boat launch. Athletes will then cycle a single-loop 56 mile bike course through the beautiful countryside of South Carolina before returning to the Georgia side of the Savannah River and the city of Augusta, Ga. Finally, athletes will run a two-loop course consisting of 13.1 miles, through the downtown community of Augusta finishing near the Augusta Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. Athletes will be vying for 50 age group slots to the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 being held in Clearwater, Florida and a $25,000.00 professional prize purse.

To recognize the 4th of July, Premier Event Management is offering athletes a one-time discounted registration fee to the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Augusta. Register online anytime throughout the month of July at www.ironmanaugusta.com beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 until July 30, 2008 and receive a $10.00 discount on your 2009 Ironman 70.3 Augusta entry. Ironman 70.3 Augusta is limited to 2,000 athletes, so don’t be left out of this new event.

The sounds fun.  Late September could be troubling.  Hope it doesn't fall on a good football weekend, lol

Man, my dad lives right by the race course.  I'd be pretty stupid to pass this up! Free room/board/wine and a 10 min drive to the race....  I think I found my motivation for racing again.

Holy crap!  I can't believe we're getting a 70.3 here!  I heard a rumor on Thursday about them making a big annoucement locally on Monday, but I had no idea is was going to be a 70.3 race!  I figured it was just another triathlon.  I'm so excited to have a 70.3 in my backyard-  and it's the weekend of my b-day   I guess I'll have to register!

Wow, I wasn't expecting that!!  Kinda wish they weren't having it the weekend as the SC Half, that's a great race too.

This fits the 70.3 pattern. Find a time and location near to where another race has established itself, then move on in for the kill. That being said, I don't care. The SC half can and should move to late August /  early September and  can still survive.

This will probably kill another half IM race that was in the works. That's too bad. A lot of work was going into it.

Does Premier Event Management have a good reputation? The New Orleans 70.3 has not even taken place yet.

If there is ever to be a full Ironman in Georgia, I always thought it would have to be Augusta. That wouldn't happen any time soon, but who knows, maybe someday.

The date couldn't be better as far as I am concerned. I will give this some thought if I have nothing else going on at that time. If not 2009, then 2010. I guess what I am saying, is... eventually.

That is totally the MO of WTC..I don't understand why they didn't brand RnRman or SC Half with the 70.3. Both are good established races and they could have moved RnR to the fall with no problem. That being said I will most likely be there...if it isn't a UGA home game weekend.

Thats a good question. This is the same company that puts on the Alpharetta marathon. I havent run that race but have heard mixed reviews.Obviously a marathon and a 70.3 are two different beasts. I guess we will have to see how New Orleans goes.

I was all on board until I read swim in the "Savannah River". I just keep thinking about the river in Savannah (along river walk) and that is not anywhere I want to swim. Even the ocean over there (Tybee) skevees me out. However I am not at all familiar with Augusta.

Is the river  clean in Augusta?

Other than that it sounds great.

I am down for a 70.3 in GA.

I did the Alpharetta Half marathon this year, and was impressed how it was ran. IMO it was a quality, organized race. I will be doing it again next year as well.

Premier Event Management is also bringing a half marathon to Augusta this fall.  It should be interesting to see how well the 1/2 mary goes.  Although a 70.3 and half marathon are different beasts, I think I'll be able to get a feel for what the 70.3 will be like after seeing how the half goes this fall.

Upstream from the chemical plants (which is where the swim takes place), it's very clean. Also, clear and cool year-round. It'll be a wetsuit-legal, and with the current, very fast swim.

How fast do you guys anticipate this race filling up?

I would like to do it next year but am shooting for the IMFL in Nov. 2009.  Would it be a bad idea to do this 70.3 at the end of September and then my first IM (IMFL) the first week of November?

I did the Nautica New York City Triathlon last year put on by Premier Event Management.  With about 4000 athletes in 2 LARGE transition areas (I was in wave 7...of 33),  I would say it was one of the best organized races I've done.  Plenty of volunteers helping out, well marked courses, and a bag check at swim start where all the bags made it to the finish in Central Park.  There was free transportation from the finish to transition to pick up your bike.  And plenty of FREE post race food.  My only complaint, free beer was limited to one per athlete. LOL

I will be looking at doing this race in 2009.

Not at all. That actually is a good time to get a last 70.3 in before a full.

This race would be perfect timing to act as a long training day to test your IM hydration, nutrition, attire, race paces, etc.

This is absolutely perfect for me!  I will be starting the negotiations with the wife latter this summer.  Did they say when the registration whould open up?  Interesting that most of the other 70.3 races did NOT fill up before registration closed.  I bet it will not fill up quickly.

Can IM GA be far behind?

Sounds cool.  I'd much rather do a 2000 person HIM than a 600 person HIM (even though SCHIM is a well run race).

However, for 2009 it's too soon after IMKY which I plan to do.  I have no desire to suffer like that after an IM.
