Lake Mills Triathlon
65F / 18C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 08m 46s
Overall Rank = 28/379
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 6/48
Pre-race routine:

Had Sneaky Petes wedding last night but was a good boy and got home relatively early. Up at 4:15 or so, waffle with PB and some milk and drove to the race. Half a Clif Bar in the car and some gatorade. Saw Maggyruth and Scoobysdad right as I was parking and 1sttimetri popped in too. Short bike to transition and chatted with a gaggle of Donks.
Event warmup:

Jogged a bit as the right leg was feeling eh. Ended up not being anything. Also swam a bit to get used to the water.
Swim
  • 08m 21s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Nothing much to report with this. Only a slight improvement over last year which suprised me cuz I thought I was out of the water a lot sooner. Pretty conservative swim but felt very relaxed relative to other years. The swim focus will come about next year, I promise!
What would you do differently?:

Start swimming more for one. With High Cliff a few weeks away, that wont be a problem, but happy with this relative to my lack of swimming and due to feeling efficient if nothing else. The issue is my expecations in this sport need to change and then I do something about it.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Meh. Better than some t1s I have had but transitions are another thing I really could work on, especially with the sprint distance.
What would you do differently?:

Work on transitions and not get my heel stuck.
Bike
  • 38m 57s
  • 15 miles
  • 23.11 mile/hr
Comments:

My plan was to hammer the bike and melt up the legs and see what happened. I dont know if it was my undisciplined tempo ride on Thursday or just not being where I thought I was bike wise, but I thought I could have shaved another minute off here this year (about a minute and a half improvement from last year) I seemed to neglect drinking a bit and on a roller I stood up to stretch the legs a bit and felt a twinge. Managed to hunker down and finish out the bike relatively solid though.
What would you do differently?:

Keep tempo stuff a week out from races. Otherwise happy taking what the legs gave me today.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Holy balls. Was this my first t2 or something? On dismount, I kicked the water bottle with my tools and all that out of the bottle cage. After about 5 steps or so and thinking fock it, I turned back realizing that it was the thing with the co2 and tubes and pump and all. It was also kind of on the principle that bigger races penalize ya for leaving equipment and I was playing by the rules whether or not they were gonna enforce em. As I bent to put on my shoe, my right calf knotted up briefly and I thought my run was going to be focked. Shaking it off, I quickly bolted to the run out. I see Yams is done with his race as he was in an earlier wave and he and 1sttimetri are screaming 'Helmet!' at me. Yougoddabekiddingme. My 9th tri and I still cant hit one of the most basic elements of transitions? So ran back about 40 yards, ignoring my instinct to throw the helmet in a hissy hit somewhere. What a tool.
What would you do differently?:

Are you kidding me? This disaster was about double previous t2s. I do find in funny though, just a bit frustrating, but gotta say my mental focus on details wasnt quite there today.
Run
  • 18m 4s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 05m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Once I finally got out of t2, I felt pretty solid and comfortable with the run, perhaps comfortably uncomfortable. I saw a herd of donks out there and just chugged away, managing some ebb and flow between 5:30-6:10 pace. Morey1 told me I looked like crap last year running to a 18:36 pr and I was shocked with how relatively comfortable this new PR was. The calf caused minor issues and I think the t2 debacle took some of the fire out of me to be honest, but I pushed hard and am happy with this run.
What would you do differently?:

Nada. Maybe gives a nod to some of my tempo stuff lately but I am sure a year of IM training last summer paid some aerobic dividends too.
Post race
Warm down:

Stumbled around and pouted a bit then saw Schmize who handed my arse to me by putting in a stellar race. Grabbed some food and water and chatted with fellow Donks but had to be at a baptism and take off quick. Egg burritos like every year (hits the spot) some endurox and another half clif bar on the way to the baptism.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental focus was just off today. I think some of this is that I dont really take sprints seriously enough vs longer races and the lack of impending doom from the first IM thang has me a bit more comfy this year. Thats good and bad and it will come with A races later in the summer from a focus standpoint, but didnt expect to lose time in transition like I did. This is the race I deserved the more I think about it. I have trained hard and saw improvements in the sports, but the sense of urgency/focus wasnt there and I made some rookie mistakes. Whatcanyado?

Event comments:

Good show every year and threw in a tech shirt. Nice way to kick off the season.

Great race, really.

Andl, I didn't hand you your arse.....I think you did    No way I will ever hang with you on the run.  If you ever take your swim to the next level (and take transitions seriously), you will be deadly.  Looking forward to the Mayhem at Michigan (or whatever we decide to call that).

Good to see you out there.  Very fun.

Great Race oh great one.  You were just fierce looking coming down that trail.  Nice ride as well.  I think we need to make you an aero helmet for the run though, that should help if you are going to take your helmet with you.

Dude - despite helmet blunder you are one fast donkai!  Awesome splits and just a great job.  You were so fast I didn't even see you there so I am not really convinced you were there - just made up a fast race report!  Anywho - awesome job and just remember you suck for being so fast!  Cool

I think we both need a little practice on transitions.  Otherwise, my man, you rocked this thing.  Another 5K PR...sweeeeet!!!

Apparently I hurt your feelings last year.  If it's any consolation, schmize looked like total sh@t this year.  I thought he was toast.

Let's see... leg twinges. Crampy calves. Lousy transitions. 1:08 overall time. Yeah, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you've definitely got "IT". That was an inhuman run split, dude. By season's end, you are just going to be SCARY quick.

Always a trendsetter. I bet next race a bunch of Donks come stormin' out of T-2 with their helmets on. Heck Morey1 is already on board. Another crazy fast effort! Its going to be a fun season for you.

Great race Joe! I think that if you got a aero helmet and kept it on you couldve taken off another 20 seconds on the run.  Really though - awesome run pace.

I just about crapped my pants when I saw you running out of T2 w/ your helmet on!
