Swim
Comments: Started on the outside and waded in a little further before starting to swim (no sprinting out this time...I learned my lesson in EL this past Monday). Clydes and Athenas started together, which was interesting. Got into a pretty decent rhythm. Was able to have decent form for me for an event. I did have to swim head up a couple times to catch my breath. There was one lady who was swimming a mix of side stroke and breast stroke that I kept trying to pass. In the process I got stuck behind another guy who was swimming breast stroke that I couldn't get around. The next wave was coming up, and I was finally able to catch a quick draft off someone from that wave that was just enough to get me up and away from the breast strokers. Kept swimming until my hand touched bottom, then ran in. Phil was standing there with the Donkai flag (awesome, Deanna!) so I got a high 5 from him and headed for my bike. What would you do differently?: Not start so far to the side. Try to get by other swimmers to try and draft sooner. Transition 1
Comments: Pulled the suit off. Having the zippers at the legs helped to get it over the heels. The newer bike shoes caused me some issues getting them on. Noticed a guy in my wave who was working on putting his headphones (!) on before putting his helmet on. And since I can't keep my mouth shut, I promptly told him they were illegal. He was disappointed, but he took them off. Finished getting my shoes on, helmet and glasses on, grabbed the bike and I was off. What would you do differently?: I need to practice this transition more with the newer bike shoes Bike
Comments: This was a decent bike ride for me...first race ride on Daisy. Got to see a lot of the Donkeys from previous waves on their way back, which was cool. I was able to get into and hold aero a couple times. That part is still very nerve wracking. I did better with my shifting, though I'm still having a hard time remember which way to push the levers to get to different gears. I think I need to put little stickers or something. I got passed by a ton of people...I was expecting that. I passed a couple people, so that was cool. I even managed to pass some people going uphill (which is a feat for this chica). I think I could have gone faster, but for right now, I'm happy with how I did. I think this is one of my faster MPH for a tri so far. What would you do differently?: Ride more, ride harder. Work more on staying in aero longer. Transition 2
Comments: Dismounted and ran to my spot. Craig was at the fence (he was done) and was talking to me while I was trying to work on getting my bike racked and my shoes off. I tried to answer but was trying to get my other stuff situated. Got my shoes on, took a quick drink, grabbed my race belt and hat and headed for the run course. What would you do differently?: Love ya, Craig, but don't ask me questions while I'm trying to transition! Also need to work on the bike shoes. Run
Comments: Why do they have a water station coming right out of transition? I should have just passed it up, but I grabbed a water, which I had to slow down to drink. Messed me up a little bit in the beginning. Trotted on til I got to the hill to the trail. I had to walk up that. I managed to run a majority of the time, taking a couple brief walk breaks (but reminding myself to walk quickly). Saw pjgrande, DeannaS, amyjotris and wildee as they were on their way in. Got to the turn around (super cold water...ack!). On my way back, pjgrande comes up to run me in somewhere past the 2 mile mark. ('Don't talk, just run. If I ask you a question, don't answer'). Shortly thereafter DeannaS shows up and joins in. She and PJ chat while I just try to make it to the end. PJ gave me some great tips on going down the hill (that was FUN!). I tried to hold it to the end, but there is a little incline after the hill that slowed me down a bit. Got a little bit of the speed back after that and ran in for the finish. What would you do differently?: Run more Post race
Warm down: I was toast. DeannaS and PJ kept me upright and walking and getting me water. I recovered shortly there after and was thrilled to see I'd come in under 2 hours. Had a breakfast burrito (mmmm...) and chatted with the other Donkeys. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training. Last updated: 2008-04-27 12:00 AM

Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 10/12
Woke up at 3:20 am. Got dress and situated bike on bike rack. Cursed myself for not picking up a better bike rack. The one I have is ok, serviceable, but makes me nervous because the hooks like to become unhooked while I'm driving. Also, while I was driving out to Lake Mills, one of the straps came undone so I had to pull over to fix it. Must purchase better bike rack!
Stopped to fill up for gas and ate a bagel on my way out to Lake Mills (1:40 drive time...ugh). Saw Jszat and Scoobysdad and ended up parking by them. Road my bike into transition, ran into a whole gaggle of Donkeys. Registered, set up transition and wandered around talking to people.
Donned the wetsuit (which I managed to tear...twice...in the process) and got in the water to get acclimated. Swam a bit to see if I could get a rhythm. The water was cold but tolerable, and the full suit was a HUGE help.
