Congrats Fred on a great race!

Interesting swim and great learning to regroup and continue on to a super day. Rocking bike pace and split even more impressive given the difficultly of the course. A few weeks back you were questioning your bike fitness...I think that question is answered!

Sets you up well for last few build weeks to LP

Awesome job, Fred! From what you describe, I think your bike and run splits look great. This should give you a lot of confidence going into LP.
Are you sure about that 6636 ft. climbing? Over 56 miles, that can't be right.

Great race!

Top 5% bike OA should tell you all you need to know about your bike fitness and this sounds like it was the perfect course to do prior to LP. The HR chart you posted really illustrates just how up and down the course is.

Way to regroup on the swim and hold strong on the run as well.

Great job Fred!

It's really tough to pace courses like that.  FWIW, I think the total climbing is closer to 5,000ft or so.  But it's not really about the total number, it's how that climbing shows up.  Sharp turns into a 10% grade are killers!

LP is much easier to get into a rhythm for most of the couse.  You should be set up for a great day there!

Great to meet you this weekend.  And congrats again on a solid performance!

Nice job - though I expect nothing less from a PSU brother!  My favorite part of your RR was definitely how you had to pull it together on the swim and get your head back.  That's the kind of reflection and learning that will really help you next time the plan has a hiccup.  Rock on bro!

Great job.  You really torched that bike course...19th out of 397!  Freakin' awesome.  You're well on your way to a great race at Lake Placid.  Keep up the consistent, purposeful, strong training!

Fantastic job Fred.

After I finished the sprint I went with a few of my teammates and sat inside the covered bridge to cheer all you 1/2 iron guys and girls on.  We sat there for hours, you probably passed us once or twice.

Great job on a tough course. Strong bike. Don't you love the hills right after you turn? Nothing like going into steep climbs with zero momentum. An outstanding time and way to keep it together on the swim. So much of this sport is mental.

I have heard more than one person compare this race to Wildflower both in terms of course difficulty and also in terms of the normal weather conditions.

I know your a bit dissapointed with your swim but you did swim quite a bit faster than Steelhead last year. (Your definitely getting faster in the water)

Your recovery in the water is very cool. I am not sure if everyone realizes that all you need is some course in front of you and you can recover from almost anything. Mishaps in the water provide plenty of opportunity to recover and still have a great race.

I saw the elevation chart and the weather conditions and it seems to me like you crushed the bike. (Only 19 folks ahead of you including relays...) Best of all, you did not trash the legs for the run that was about to come.

Now it's hot and a run course like that conspires to grind our "Will to Finish Strong" into the dust. I think you did really well with the run for the course and conditions. More often then not, it's tough to gauge what the run is going to be like in changing weather conditions and so pacing the bike accordingly can be a daunting task.

But then, I am sure you ran down a ton of folks out there on the final leg.  I bet you did not notice how hot it really was out there until after the race

Beautiful job! Was in a LBS shop at lunch and everyone was talking about how hard it was. I just adore Larry and Michele and know they put on a phenomenal race!
If you can do Black Bear, you can do any bear! And you smoked it!

Hi,

Sounds like you did a great job and enjoyed the race.  You picked up some valuable lessons learned.  That would make it worth it in the end.  Glad you stuck out the mind demon and continued the race.  Congratulation on a strong bike ride, great job!

Love your statement about this being a course for someone wanting a challenge...not a PR (I'm going to have to borrow that phrase).
