Subject: Dumb wheel question
Are Shimano 9 & 10 hubs interchangeable i.e. if I buy a set of 9sp, can I use them on my current 10sp setup?

Yes, same freehub body for 8/9/10 cassettes.  You may need a very small shim in some cases behind the cassette.

Edit:  Assuming you run the correct cassette for your gearing.  You obviously will not be able to use the 9 spd. cassette with 10 spd. shifting.

Don't forget there was that one brain fart by Shimano where they had that line of 10-speed-only hubs.

You should be okay.

I run DA on my tri bike (with SIS/Friction selection) and have no issue going between 9spd/10spd cassettes.

Running friction I would not expect any issues.  But are you saying running indexed it works for you??

dumb question for me...why would you want to buy a 9sp cassette instead of a 10sp? Cost is the only think I can think for a reason, but can they be that much of a diff in price?

I'm reading that as he is looking to get a set of wheels with a 9 speed hub on them to run his 10 speed set up.

Indeed. Had an indoor crash (trainer let go of my bike, rode into heavy oak entertainment unit, fell into fully decorated christmas tree. rear wheel got hung up in the trainer, and isn't safe to ride outdoors) and need to replace my training wheels. Found a set over on ST.
