Total Time = 1h 11m 40s
Overall Rank = 8/197
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 2/25
Pre-race routine:

Woke up, had a pb&j and some gatorade. Loaded the car, and then hit the road for the drive to the other side of Reston.
Event warmup:

Swam a lap and then hung out with my husband and our friend jess and her boyfriend.
Swim
  • 07m 56s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt like the swim went pretty well. I started #265, so there weren't too many people in my way - as opposed to how it looked for the people in the first 100. I passed 3 people - two at the wall, and one in the middle of the lane.
What would you do differently?:

I need to spend some more time in the pool. I've really been focusing more on bike/run this season. I did this swim about 20 seconds faster last year.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Ugh, so yeah, my number was 265 - this put me in THE last rack, the rack farthest away from the bike exit. Since i'm not coordinated enough to attempt the whole "leave your shoes on the bike" thing, I ran in my shoes to the mount. Took a while, and my cleats got all jiggly, so i was freaked about that too.
What would you do differently?:

Become coordinated so that I can do the "leave your shoes on the bike" thing without crashing. Or maybe start practicing it more.

Also, i need to start foregoing the socks. Sitting on my ass and putting them on ate up some time too.
Bike
  • 34m 57s
  • 12 miles
  • 20.60 mile/hr
Comments:

I had fun on the bike course. There were a lot of people to pass and some nice hills to hammer down. The hill going up Baron Cameron was a bitch...but most hills are. I need to start working on some hill work. Looking at my results from last year, I did the bike course about 6 minutes faster this year.

Don't know why i noticed this...coming up Wiehle my third lap, i look over and see this family cheering. Sitting in front of them is this cat. Just chilling out, watching the race. I thought that was totally cool...i love cats that act like dogs. My cat hisses at me whenever I enter the room...not a cool kitty.

I just wrote a whole paragraph about cats in my race report...wow, i need a life.
What would you do differently?:

I think the bike went pretty well. I need to just focus on distance as my next 4 races are Olympic distance. I should probably throw in hills too.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Another long one. A long slow run from dismount to my rack.

Learned later I knocked out a screw from my right cleat. Need to tighten those better.
What would you do differently?:

Learn the whole "get off the bike with your shoes still clipped in" thing.
Run
  • 25m 25s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs felt soooo good coming off my bike onto the run. I was a little disappointed with my time. I know i can go faster - my 5k at Little Pepper 2 weeks ago was a minute faster, and that course was hillier.

Compared with last year, 1 minute faster.
What would you do differently?:

work on running faster. I am planning on doing the Reston Runners track workouts that start next week.
Post race
Warm down:

Introduced myself to some BT'ers i saw near the finish line.

Jogged back to the run course to wait for my husband to finish his first tri ever.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I've basically been training depending on how i feel: "oh today i feel like running on some trails" - thing is, every day I feel like running on some trails. I need to start hitting the pool and the track more.

Event comments:

I think it was a fun race. I raced it last year and was the 5th female finisher with a time of 1:18. It was neat to see all the same people who raced it last year put in faster times. I'm not sure if we all trained harder, or if we were just more familiar with the course. It was definitly more competitive this year. I would do this race again...just plan on hitting up the California Tortilla across the road for my post race re-feul (mmmm, blackened chicken caesar).

Well done... I was #257, must have been on your bike rack.  This race I had the bike shoes in my hand and ran past the mount point, then put them on.  That saved some time, maybe try that next time.  6 minutes on the bike alone is a pretty impressive improvement.  Great job!
