Member 58 Chandler | Subject: New to site and world of multi sport Hi, My name is Kerri and I live in Chandler. I just posted in the introduction thread and then found this forum. I am new to the world of multi-sport. I've been running for a year and have completed several 1/2 marathons. I was training for the San Diego Rock and Roll when I suffered a stress fracture in my right foot during an 18 mile training run. My orthopod suggested I look into triathalons as a way to keep training during these hot summer months. The more I read, the more I think I could really like this sport! I'm a bit intimidated by the bike portion but figure with more education I can learn about the equipment requirements. I look forward to getting to know you all. It is nice to have local contacts. Expert 748 Big Bear City, California | Subject: RE: New to site and world of multi sport Welcome! Always good to have new faces. My wife (Sportyj) and I got into triathlons a similar way after our first half marathon, and have been HOOKED ever since. Prepare to be addicted. The most important thing with a bike is to have a road bike (price not important) that fits you well, it makes riding on the roads much more enjoyable. Bummer about the injury leading up to the R&R my wife and just finished that race. I am sure you will get back to that distance soon. |

Member 58 Chandler | Subject: RE: New to site and world of multi sport Thanks! I have a couple of questions for you all. My orthopod is probably not going to release me to full time running until the end of August. I hope to start a walk/run program in the next 4 weeks or so. Are there any Fall sprints I can look at possibly doing? Where is a good place to buy a road bike? What kind of workout tips can you give me regarding spinning on a stationary bike at the gym?

Extreme Veteran 373 | Subject: RE: New to site and world of multi sport Welcome. I am newer to the area also Kerri and this site is great for info. I live in Ahwatukee so not that far from you in Chandler. I have only been to a couple bike stores but I still havent found one that has "a lot" of tri gear but i still have a few on my list to go check out. Landis was a helpful big place someone here turned me on to that place.... as far as spinning... i dont do it.. just ride outside or get a used trainer |

My husband just bought his first bike at Landis and got a great deal on a 2007 model. Good luck with your training and I hope your foot heals well. |

Thank you. I intend on being the most compliant patient ever because I hate not running. I've read that stress fractures take time to heal and I'd rather take that time now while it is hot than exacerbate the problem and be off my feet even longer! Do most tri sprints occur during the fall or am I better off waiting until spring (and just continuing my running in the fall)? |

Hi - Thank you for the info! Do you find training for a tri is difficult with children? My kids are 11, 9, 6 and almost 2. |

Several of us went to Anthem last December for a pool sprint, our Canadian friend started in Feb with a sprint tri, and if you read the blogs/logs/race reports of several of the BT'ers here you will find that we are lucky enough ot have tons of events several tiems a month (Although you may need ot go to Flagstaff in the heat of July as phoenix dries a bit then)Thank you. Come meet and gret a few of us on a Thursday night at Saguaro Lake for a swim if you can. On biking - a road bike is nice, a tri-bike is better, but any bike can be used for the first sprint including a mountain bike or a Huffy. This sport requires a little more gear than just running shoes so I advise taking your time and getting the right item once (instead of always upgrading) and be slow/choosey to buy. As 'Bot said - you will become addicted and find all your spare cash heading out to improve fitness goals! Never forget that most of all it is important to have fun. Most of us keep this attitude right out front and it shows in Blogs/logs/inspires/and forums - and how we keep at it! |

LOL. That is good to know. I wonder what the trade-in value of a toddler is. |

Hi - Thank you for the info! Do you find training for a tri is difficult with children? My kids are 11, 9, 6 and almost 2. Javamom has kids?! Say it isn't so! Seriously kids help I think. Especially if you involve them, there are several special family tri's where our young can swim/bike/run abreviated distances and we (parents) can even join them and pace for them during the race. I have a 9 y/o son that is doing his first Tri in Anthem in December, and riorio had her children do one or more as well. Not sure about the rest of them, but I know the 'bot's have done special "doggie" races too! |

(7,4,1) Biking shouldn't be intimidating. Anyone can ride a bike. Also, you can't drown on a bike. That should give you a good idea of the part that I consider intimidating. Welcome, feel free to ask questions. -Jot |

Yeah, kids do help because I do all of this to escape them. I love my kids (11,8,4) but I love my mommy time. It can be tough to balance their schedules but early mornings or late nights always seem to work to balance things out. My oldest is taking a babysitting certification class in a few weeks and I am all over bribing him to babysit when he is ready. :>O |

Hi - Thank you for the info! Do you find training for a tri is difficult with children? My kids are 11, 9, 6 and almost 2. My kids are 6 and almost 2. Train early (before they get up). Not so easy for me as my toddler is up by 5:30. My wife is a runner, so we have to split the time that one of us gets out early. |

He is taking a Masters swim class with a friend, has a top of the line bike and is working with a personal coach. I love to swim, so that part I'm cool with. I can ride a bike, but what intimidates me is the equipment and jargon associated with it.

Pro 3715 AZ | Subject: RE: New to site and world of multi sport I seriously think it's time for us to get a "club babysitter" where we can all chip in and pay, and they can watch our kids while we race, or train, or play rockband! Trick is finding someone who can handle them all, and wouldn't mind starting at O-dark-30 on race mornings!!! But seriously, even if we all pitched in like 15 dollars, the person could make some good bank for a few hours of crazy kid wrangling! Also....Lisa.....here is the perfect opportunity to suck Kerri into the club and get her to eventually want club uniform stuff so you can get some too! HAhahahaha! |

I would be so in for the club babysitter!! The time I need one the most is Thursday nights for OWS. Hmmm...then again I could use some cash so maybe I should BE the club babysitter. Oh yeah, Kerri you want to order a club uniform with me? I am ready when you are! |

Perhaps you could start by inviting her to OWS on a thursday first . . . wait, get the jersey money and order in first - then see if she wants to be a part of the Cool Kids! Seriously Kerri, most of us (except Standswithfist) are fun loving amatures that train together and support each other as friends at races. All about fun (you may even learn jargon along the way as well as tidbits like inflate your tires to more than 40 psi)- however, look out for "Stands" on race day if you see her Grrrr face - just slowly move out of the way with no sudden jerks! |
