Has anyone done the Boilerman? I am looking for an event in September and it might be nice to finish the season with my first Oly.

Is it well run? Any feedback would be great. See some of you Saturday at the YMCA Sprint!

I did this race 2 years ago and it was by far the worst race I've done. Hopefully they've addressed the issues they had 2 years ago. The race volunteers all seemed to be hung-over college kids who wanted to be anywhere else but there. They even had a keg at the back of registration for em. The registration process was very disorganized with very long lines. It got to the point I wasn't sure if I'd get through the line and make the race start. The run from the swim finish to transition was through a freshly cut field but there were twigs and sticks sticking up in the grass so you ran and just prayed you didn't step on one. I stepped on a few. Hopefully they've put down some kind of mat to protect peoples feet. There were no swim caps provided which was fine but just seemed kind of wierd. There were no bathrooms accessible from trasition during the race unless you wanted to run a ways the complete oppposite direction to find one on the other side of the registration tent. I've been in other races where bathrooms were not right next to transition but they had one avaiable after you've exited transition. I just had to find a nice bush on the side of the trail during the run. Hopefully they've addressed these issues and will put on a good race this year. Just wanted to let you know my experience.

Thanks. So far I have heard nothing positive about it. Sad, since I live so close and have met some of the Purdue Tri Club members and they seem alright.

That's why I posted this, to see if I could be swayed to do it this year. At this point, I probably won't.

I also was told to stay away from it.  I'd like to do another Olympic, but no thanks.

I saw on www.trifind.com that this race is pending USAT sanctioning, which may help improve the event. I also emailed the race coordinator to let them know about some negative impressions of past Boilermans. I asked him/her when they think that they will get the USAT sanctioning and what exactly is that they are waiting on. I told them that if I can have their guarantee that it will be a well-run, safe, and USAT sanctioned then we will sign up. It kind of stinks though, because we had planned this to be our "A" race and are on week 6 of our training plan. I'll let you all know what BoilerMan's reply is. Have a great day!!

As the 2008 Race Director I would like to address a few of these posts.  First off, I am a new race director this year and I plan on making a lot of changes.  The race director who was responsible for holding the race two years ago was no longer race director after the year that the keg was at registration.  Last year there was no alcohol at the event.

I participated in the event last year, my first year at Purdue, and I can not say I agree with the comment about the sticks.  The run up to transition was through mowed grass, but the sticks were removed from the pathway.

We asked for suggestions after the race last year, and I personally went through and read each of the many emails that came in and wrote down all of the comments both good and bad, and they will be addressed this coming year.  This post was the first anyone had mentioned the location of a restroom, and we will work on changing the location this coming year.

The USAT sanctioning is pending because we are changing the location of the race course.  Once we finalize details on the location, we will be able to finish the sanctioning process.  Last year's race was a totally reasonable race, with no real issues.  This is my first year as race director and this year we are planning on having a much improved and more professionally run race.

We are going to give this race a try! I think that it is encouraging that there is a new race director and it seems that he really wants the race to be a well-run event. His reply to my inquiry was very prompt and professional. I can tell that he cares about the success of the Boilerman.
I hope some of you will change your mind! He said that registration is not open yet as they are still ironing out a few of the details. Have a great day!

OK....I'll consider it since there seems to be a new person running it who wants to make it a good experience.

What is the date?

I was thinking about this race also, since my daughter is a freshman this year at Purdue (gives me a legitimate excuse to keep an eye on her)

They are having big problems. I swam at the aquatic center at Purdue last Friday and was chatting with the RD- DNR denied them the ability to swim in Fairfield lakes. Rainybrook denied them access too. So, without the RD just coming out and saying it- there is no race as of now because where will the swim be? I don't know.. I took it off of my schedule. I was bummed because that was my A race that I have been training so hard for. Last week was a bad week mentally for me. Thanks Boilerman!
On a good note, the Mighty Mississenewa in Peru will now be my A race. I'm sticking with my Oly plan, I just bumped it up a couple of weeks. I'll get a few running races in this fall now too.

I'm not extending my 16 week Oly training plan any longer than I have to. Wow. How disappointing.

Just received an e-mail from the RD. They are trying to schedule something in October, using the Purdue aquatic center for the swim. It won't be a long swim, but the bike and run will be Oly length. I suggested a du, but they already do the 'du' in the spring. See you at Missisinewa, good luck.

I'm riding the Mississinewa course tonight, I will give you a report, I don't think anything has changed, but I do think some of the roads were paved.

Ron how's the course, many hills?  Also what kind of terrain is the run portion of the course?

The bike is around the lake, it has some hills nothing major, there is a climb around mile 14 that is about a 1/2 mile long but not steep I never got under 16 mph on it, and another mile around mile 15 or so that is a short steep climb that you run also. The run goes around the camp ground on access roads, then comes out onto the bike course right before the only real hill on the course. You then run about a 1 mile to 1 1/2 mile on the road and turn into the woods for a trail run for about 3/4 of a mile with steps and a bridge, then back to the road for the final .5 mile.

I think it's a fast bike course I averaged 21.5 last year on it, your transistion times will be added to your bike split and some of the run, since you don't have T1 or T2 splits so if you look at the results bike times may look slow, but there's probably 2-3 minutes added to it for T1 and T2 and it's a long run from the beach to T1.

I as you know am new to this stuff.  In fact, you first pointed out that if I might be able to become ranked.  Do you have a couple of races in addition to Clearwater that you would think would help me get ranked?  Right now I have the mighty miss... and maybe the Fishers race, could you help me figure a couple that might get into the rankings?

Thanks,

Greg

PS I understand it is getting kind of late and I just joined USTA after Steelhead

So any BT'rs going to be in town on sunday for the race?  I know the swim is shorter and in a pool, but I'm still going to do it.

I just today noticed that the race is back on.  I'm on the fence on whether or not to do it.  After the race was put on hold I changed my plan to call this tri season over and plan on an oly or two or three for next year.  So it might be a game time decision for me.  Maybe I'll see how hard I party during the football game tomorrow.  Too much beer = no race.  Boiler up!
