Age Group Rank = 8/51
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early and had my customary blueberry muffin and some soda. Packed everything up and headed out about 4:15. Transition opened at 5:00 and I found my rack. Set everything up and just hung out and talked to other BTrs. Was on the same rack as Melanie, Ben and Ocky.
Event warmup:

Once everything was set up, I went for a quick run around the parking lot. Went down to the pool and swam a couple hundred warm up and waited. Our start time was 6:20, so it wasn't a long wait. Mel, Terry, Ocky and I all hung out in the kiddy pool to stay warm. :)

Comments:

I had put down a pretty aggresive time for my swim of 8:30. It would definitely take a PR as I think I had only done about a 9:30 in a race. I was lucky to be one lane over from Ocky and Melanie was 2 lanes over, so at least I had some people I new around me. I started off strong as I was the first swimmer in my lane and didn't want to hold anyone up. Suprisingly about 4 laps in as I turned I realized I had a good sized lead on the rest of the people in my lane. So I dialed it back a hair to make sure I didn't blow up. I swam strong and got out of the water about 8:45. Not 8:30 but. Then I had a 15 second run to the transition area. This was a great swim for me. I saw Ocky in transition and figured that Mel had just beat me out.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep training. I know I can get faster swimming. 500 now is such an easy distance for me, I know I can go all out and not ruin the rest of my race.
Transition 1
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

This was a good transition in a cramped transition area. They preassigned racks of 10 riders. And of course we're all in the same heat, so it was chaos. Luckilly I was there early and got an end spot. Put on my socks, shoes grabbed helmet and was gone.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was one of the faster transitions.

Comments:

I had a hard time feeling "It", on the first lap. It was still pretty cold when we started. Once I got to Broadway, I started feeling better. I new that if I could stay with Ocky, I was making good time. Sure enough on the first lap I finally caught him and passed him on Broadway. Of course he passed me back coming down Wildcat. The second lap I rode pretty strong and worked out the calf cramping problem I started to have. I was ready for the run and new I could have a good time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a good ride. There was a headwind going up towncenter and Lucent. It got stronger on the second lap, but everyone had to ride in it and I was happy with my time.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

This was super quick at 44 sec. I took my feet out of my shoes before I got to transition. This was a first time for that, but I wanted to save every second. It was nice to have Matt cheering me on to hurry my A$$ out of transition. :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m 46s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran very well this was a personal PR for a 5K in Colorado (Alone or Tri). I was hoping for about 25, so this was great. I knew I was going to have a good run when I saw the first mile in 7:06. I dialed back a little knowing that the second half would be uphill. Felt really strong and saw Ben, Ocky and Mel on the run. There was another guy named Darren, who beat me by about 10 seconds that I had chased pretty much the whole race, and I tried to catch him at the end. This was a great run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Just hung out and talked to everyone. It was great to see so many BTr's at a small race this early in the season. Since Pelican Fest was cancelled many people were there.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing, I felt great and had a great day. I was targeting 1:13 as that was what the 3rd place person did last year. I got 1:12. Unfortunately some really fast people who were going to race Pelican Fest showed up. But hey, for the first race of the season, I am not going to complain.

Event comments:

This is a good race, and I might have to look at some of the other races in HR for fun.

Hey Dan, congrats on the PR!!!  You looked like a new man out there on the run.  Comfortable and in control.  I didn't even recognize you when you until you said something.  Looks like you're starting out the season on a great note.

Great job, and congrats on the PR. I set a 5k PR at a duathlon recently and it made me wonder what kind of standalone 5k PR I had in me!

Congrats on the PR!

BTW the wind picked up even more as we FBOP'ers hit the bike course.
