Pre-race routine:

Did a relay with Kathy G (bike) and Chris (swim). I got added at 5 PM yesterday - after swimming and biking the olympic course....so no training, no taper and my longest run has been 6-7 miles....no time to panic either....
I went up to Mooseman to volunteer - which I did friday night, all day saturday (from 5:15am...) and this morning too....
Kathy G came over to registration after I did the swim and bike and she looked at me and said: 'want to be our runner?' so I said: 'are you high?' she and Chris said - 'you can walk....otherwise we DNF' - you would think after all the years of jewish guilt trips I would be immune to this sort of thing....but no....I inform them that I have NEVER run that far....and they reiterated that I can be slow.....so I figured what the heck....worst case I walk.....

Event warmup:

Helped at registration from 5:15 until close to 7....got body marked then cheered Chris (our swimmer) on and Kathy when she went to bike....schmoozed, crashed on a couch at the Clifbar station. Denise came over and hung out - it was nice being out of the sun as it was now over 90 degrees.....

Comments:

It was hot as hades - 95 degrees....I did a good job staying cool and hydrated - put a sponge in my hat and every opportunity dumped water on....shoes got squishy...might have to check zoots....

So having not run this far I had interesting running commentary in my head....at each mile marker I would think about what was left and when that number got below 10 it seemed a bit more reasonable....then when I was one quarter, one third, one half way through that was cool....the funny part for me was after the second turn around when I was headed back from the second loop and my thoughts were - oh just a 5K left...HA that was previously a hard run to me!
I actually felt good until about the last 1-2 miles. Then my hamstrings really started to hurt. a lot. like yelling at me - something to the order of wtf?? why are you doing this? you never asked us to do this before! you usually stop forever ago! Then my mind went to really hating Kathy G....because she talked me into this....and then the finish was in site and I was able to rally and sprint the finish....
What would you do differently?:

train
Post race
Warm down:

went into the lake as an ice bath...sat, and then drove home

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of training, lack of taper.....

Event comments:

I did a half marathon....unbelievable...of course my coach is already looking at me and saying I should do an olympic, and since I signed up for chicago (as a sprint) he is already saying to do that as an olympic.....

Oh wow.  You qualify as an incredibly good sport.  Just drop in and run 13.1 miles on a hot as he11 day.   People that aren't already impressed with your work ethic should take notice.  You rock like few other people.

Never ran that distance and the longest was 1/2 of it... NICE JOB!!!! Great pace, too!

Great to see you today.  Sorry I didn't wait until you are done.  I had to go shortly after you started as I need to return the cottage to the landload before 2pm, and I had to pack.  See you in other races.

So you were hating me hugh I have broad shoulders....

Doing the relay, hanging out with all the fun BTers really made this race a blast.

I just asked never really thinking about it and was so stoked you said yes. We were MOP for relays 5/9 not bad for a relay but together on the last minute other than Chris.

You rock Cat!

Darn, that's an impressive time for not training the distance.  No wonder your coach is telling you to do an olympic.
