Total Time = 3h 31m 17s
Overall Rank = 429/700
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 105/106
Pre-race routine:

My buddy Scott who is a Massage thearapist gave me a pre race warm up massage. Ate a proteing bar and tried to settle down. About 10 min. before my waves start, I got in the water. It was cold...but not too bad. I decided against a wet suit this year, because of my shoulder.
Event warmup:

Tried to warm up in the water...I knew something was wrong from the warm up. I couldn't swim any distance with my face in the water...This is where I started freaking out.
Swim
  • 44m 47s
  • 1367 yards
  • 03m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

The horn went off...I started and almost immediately had a panic attack. I couldn't catch my breath. I pulled my head out of the water, and swam that way. I kept trying to put my face in the water, and each time, I freaked out a little.
What would you do differently?:

1. Practice open water swimming
2. get a new wet suit
3. Loose 25 lbs
Transition 1
  • 04m 33s
Comments:

As I was running to my bike, my achilles was killing me. I kept thinking, "I will never be able to finish the run"
What would you do differently?:

Under the circumstances not much...if I would have finished the swim in a better fashion, I would have cared more.
Bike
  • 1h 34m 26s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 15.79 mile/hr
Comments:

I have no clue what my AG or OA rank is on the bike portion. The web site hasn't listed that yet. If they do, I will change this data. But I have to immagine, its the same as the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Ummmm! Train on the bike. I rode a total of 30 miles in training for this event. Time in the saddle would have really helped. I have never enjoyed the bike much, but during this race, it was my favorite part. Late in the bike leg, I got my second wind (or first wind, since I never really had my first wind during the swim). I am very happy with my performance having not trained at all. Maybe next year I will actually train and maybe then I can do better.
Transition 2
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

This went smoothly. I didn't have to mess with my shoes, since I only have regular flat pedals right now. I did forget to remove my glasses, and I hate running with my glasses. but it ended up not being too bad, since my hat kept them from sliding around off my nose...
What would you do differently?:

not much
Run
  • 1h 05m 5s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Ummmm...I should have been able to do much better than this...but...I have to remember that a) I had a bad Achilles, which, although I could feel it, didn't really hurt, and b) because of said achilles, I had not ran in over 3 weeks...
What would you do differently?:

Not have an injury 3 weeks before race
Post race
Warm down:

collaps

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me...I didn't do anything right leading up to this race.

Event comments:

I have never been so proud of such a bad performance in a race. I almost didn't run this race at all, and then several points throughout the race, I wanted to just give up. But I didn't...I couldn't give up and call myself a triathlete! How could I face people back here on BT if I knew that I could have finished, but didn't because I just couldn't HTFU. For several hours after the race, I refused to wash my numbers off my arm, I wanted them there as a badge of honor...a reminder of what I had just done. I think I want to do another Tri...not sure if I can this year, money is such a big issue, but if I can, I want to do a sprint...something smaller to try to get over this whole open water swim thing.

I agree that sometimes we take the most pride when we know we may not have done our best but struggled to finish.  Way to hang in there when things were difficult!

cold water swim!  Seems to be the theme of the races the past weekend.  Our water was 60 °F and the day progressed into > 90 °F.

I am not sure how loosing 25 lb would help keeping you warm  .  Have you tried wearing 2 swim caps?  Helps a lot in the cold water.  Better yet, wear a neoprene cap.

I completely understand what you went through on the swim - I have lived that swim on several occasions.  I know how hard it is to get out of the water and press on after a panic attack, but you did.  Congratulations for shaking off the bad swim, collecting yourself, and getting through the rest of the race.  Great job!

Well, the cold water isn't what gave me the panic attack...actually it wasn't that cold, once in, it was quite comfortable.

And let me Thank everyone for the great inspires both here on in my log!!! BT rocks!

Sometimes it means more to NOT give up than to worry about the time you'll post.  This is just a new jumping off point from which you'll improve greatly.

I'm proud of ya!  Big step for you!!  BIG WOOFS!!!

Fantastic job conquering a tough race -- you're right, it says A LOT about you as an athlete that you didn't give up, that you kept pushing right through to the end. It's even more impressive that you did that after such a rocky swim (and yes, I know all about the race- and/or OWS-induced panic attack).

Congratulations!

Way to fight through that swim!   I was in a very similar situation with you.  Very little training heading into the race, but solid 1/2 iron training up three weeks prior to that point.  I thought, let's see what happens!  So we got into the water, I stuck my face in a few minutes before the start, this usually helps calm me down.  When water is below 70 degrees, it is cold for me.

I stood all the way in the back, and didn't start actual swimming until 30 secs. after the shot went off.  100 to 200 yards into it I notice that everyone is really far ahead of me, so I naturally try to catch up, but I am a HORRIBLE swimmer, http://www.athleteslounge.com/results/event/2277/results.php, I came in two places after you!

Anyways, I was so out of breath and panicking, that I summoned the first lifeguard on a surfboard to tell him that I was ready to quit.  He tells me that I look fine and my head is above the water, so I decide to continue on.  47 mins. later I was on shore.

The feeling of helplessness while all the other waves behind us began to pass us is pretty bad.  I hate stopping, looking around, finding the buoy, then swimming for 7-10 strokes, and repeating the entire process at least 30 or 40 more times to try and catch up.  I didn't catch up with anybody.  I can honestly say I was last!

I'm guessing that we each swam an entire mile, not the 1.25 km we were supposed to do!

I'm so glad I found this post since wish you well in future races!  You have a great attitude!

 Arnel

Congrats on the finish!

I'm still working on minimizing/prevent Open Water swim anxiety.  It sucks!

Did you have fun?

I had a blast.  I was going to give up Tri's after this race, because of cost for both the race and bike up keep...now I want to do more... so I need to find some way of funding them.  We will see.  before I do anything I need my Achilles to heal..
