Total Time = 5h 54m 19s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Female 50-54
Age Group Rank = 3/21
Pre-race routine:

I traveled to MD (from northeast PA) on Friday. I was solo...The family will be in Lake Placid with me next month. Eagleman was a "B" race for me. It was my 5th Half IM. I trained right through this one. Heading into this one a bit fatigued would be a good indicator of my current level of conditioning. I have three more intense training wks before my taper for IMLP (my first IM)
Event warmup:

I stayed in Easton (about 15 miles from the race start). I was up at 3:30 and on my way by 4:30am. It was already 73*. My wave was first into the water (after the pros) at 6:50am. My warm-up was basically the 10 min walk carrying all of my transition stuff (We had to park a few blocks away due to soggy conditions at the park from a torrential storm earlier in the wk).
Swim
  • 49m 7s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

Hey, I'm 51 yrs old and I just learned to swim with my face in the water at age 48. I'll take what I can get at this point so I am ok with this swim. Right now I am working on holding steady and building my endurance for my IM swim next month.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Of course, I would like to be faster, but my swim is what it is right now and that is ok.
Transition 1
  • 04m 39s
Comments:

My transitions still need work. Sometimes my wetsuit just glides off. This time I struggled a bit. Eagleman has a huge transition area (2100 athletes) so the distance for in and out adds time on too.
What would you do differently?:

I liked the idea that I was really organized. I just need to move a bit faster.
Bike
  • 3h 06m 42s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.00 mile/hr
Comments:

In these weather conditions my goal was to ride at 18mph so that I would have my legs under me for the run (my strength). I also practiced my hydration/nutrition routine for LP and all went really well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...felt just right. If this was an "A" race I might have pushed harder on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 03m 56s
Comments:

We were really crowded on the bike racks. The guys next to me had quite a bit of stuff and one of their tire pumps ended up under my wheel. I had to juggle my bike around...no biggie...
I also wear Injinji toe socks for running and getting them onto damp sweaty feet is a challenge. I always lose time here but it is SO worth it to run strong and finish without blisters.
What would you do differently?:

Again, I was organized but will continue working on moving a bit faster.
Run
  • 1h 49m 58s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

WooHoo! Finally the run! I felt amazingly good from the very first step. Mentally and physically I was spot on. It was tough to see the carnage out on the course. I think I must have passed hundreds. I stayed focused and ran steady. At each station I walked about 15 strides while drinking two cups and dumping ice in my cap and down my top.
I carried a gel flask and Endurolytes and stayed on my routine.
I had a negative split on the run and was pleased with that too.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was far from my half marathon PR, but in these conditions and at the end of a 70.3 I was very pleased with this run.
Post race
Warm down:

My oldest son had driven down from Phila to be at the finish line. It was great having him there! I had a strong kick and I felt great when I crossed the line. We got our picture taken together. We hung around for the awards ceremony and I received a really cool trophy for my third place AG finish. I am especially excited that I had the fastest run split in my division. Maybe someday I'll have a shot at the Kona slot...A girl can dream, right?

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No taper and the heat.

Event comments:

I am pleased with my race. This was a solid confidence booster for IMLP.

Congrats! Seems like there was a ton of carnage out there, but it sounds as if you paced well and finished strong. Great work!

Wow you did a great job out there. I was hoping they would link up a few of the waves so that we all could get out and back sooner. Man it got hot.

Like you I really didn't put a full effort into this race up to the run. The run was nearly the best I could muster under the conditions. Other than the heat, I felt very good. Bring on IMLP!!! See you there!

Congrats on the 3rd place!

BTW, good luck in LP... I'll be there too

Thanks!

Yeah! BT will be well represented... We have to organize a swim or meal or something!

By the way, my husband is a PSU alumnus and our youngest daughter hopes to go there...

It was great meeting and getting to know you. Wow, you got some bling. I expect you will be in Kona sooner rather than later. Wish I could have cheered you on at the awards ceremony, but alas, I was still "running".
Great job.

Congrats on the finish and especially the AG placing!!

I must have passed you on the bike somewhere in the 20 - 30 mile range based on our splits and starting time.  Wish I would have known who to look for, I would have said hi!!

We'll meet in LP along with the rest of the BT crew hopefully!

Fantastic run split - holy cow! Great execution in challenging conditions. The experience, especially the mental execution in those conditions, will serve you well in LP. Remember that when you go through the peaks and valleys of an IM. No doubt you'll be running down Ali'i soon...

"Woo-hoo! The run!"

Now, that's just not something you read every day, esp when the run is 13.1 in searing heat!

Great job!
