Comments:

Woooh!! What a race!! First half mile was tough because everyone was climbing on each other (2 waves of about 300 people each). Then I got stuck close to the span I was supposed to avoid for current reasons. So I was swimming diagonally to move forward for about a mile. Then I could relax for about a mile and swim straight (second shipping channel wasn't as bad). Then I got tired, but at about mile 3 you can really see the other shore, so that was helpful. I got pretty motivated. Around mile 4 my joints were all burning, and the only thing that kept me going was thinking about how lame it would be to get pulled out .4 miles from the end. Finishing was such an amazing feeling, though. I heard Nick shout my name, and I slowwwwly walked to the timing mat.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much. I swam A LOT in March and April to get ready for this. I didn't swim near as much as I wanted to in May, but it ended up being OK, and I'm glad I didn't overdo it by keeping my mileage so high- I probably would have just gotten hurt. Maybe more sprint intervals later in the training sessions. I let these slide when I started putting on the mileage, and they would have been helpful as I was in the shipping channel where the current was stronger. More strength training, too, maybe. But overall I was really pleased.

Awesome race. Definitely doing it again- maybe not next year (focusing on running) but the year after if possible!!

Congrats on a great swim! Sounds like you had a much better attitude than I did at Mile 3. And Mile 4. And so on.

I do remember seeing someone at a distance with a BT t-shirt and U of Md shorts.. was that you?

Awesome job!!

I was signed up to do this race in 2001... was swimming a bunch and then had a bike wreck that caused me to not be able to do it because I threw out my back.

What did you do training wise, for instance, what was your longest workout and how many yards and/or miles per week did you swim at the peak?

Great report, thanks!
