Well, if triplet, djdavey, amyjo, and mujfalc are going to be there, there is no way I am going to miss it.  I am ALL IN!

I think we have a room in the radisson.  And will definitely be up for dinner at the chancery again.  We had a TON of BTers there last year (although, I had to eat early b/c HL and I had some work to do).

Agree with all other comments.  Course can be windy.  Can be humid.  Swim isn't too bad sans the first 300-400m into the waves.  Bike is rolling to flat.  Couple small climbs.  Roads are decent.  I remember a few rough patches, but overall nice (except the downtown area).  Run is so super cool.  Along the beach, then into the neighborhoods to the lighthouse and back through the zoo.  And you get to do it twice!  Oh yeah, I don't think I have ever seen any animals in the zoo, but they advertise it like you would.

Should be a blast!!!!

djdavey - 2008-06-11 9:58 AM i plan on being there the day before for the sprint to cheer on my fellow donkai nation members!!!!!!

That's our Dave! I'm doing the sprint then off to the Jimmy Buffett concert at Alpine and then will be out to cheer on the HIM's on Sunday.

---offer still stands, if anyone needs a base camp for jockstrappers and families or a place to park our house is 8 houses from bike route on main street, 3 blocks from the run route  and an easy 10 min walk to the transition area.

Can I park overnight and sleep in my van?  Serious.  (no, I don't live down by the river).

I just may have to suck it up and do the half again! It is a great race, and close to home. Im guessing it is still open?

Room for one more?

I need to register for the race...but I was one of the unlucky ones in the Kansas 70.3 field who got pulled from the course due to the storm that rolled in.

Coach says Spirit of Racine is my best bet for a rematch on the distance.

I'm feeling really deflated and upset about how everything went down over the weekend. I want to be excited about Racine, but I can't shake this funk just yet. Anyone have any fun little things to share about the race that may perk me up?

- Barb

PS...anyone know what the total elevation climb is on the bike? Kansas was 2800(ish) feet, so I'm wondering if they're at all comparable?

I seriously doubt it, to be honest.

They don't say exactly how much climbing is involved, but here is a map that has a teeny tiny elevation chart on it.  As I recall, there was one bigger hill around mile 9, and then just a lot of rollers.  Nothing too bad out there.

Actually, the biggest hill is probably right outside transition, going from the beach area up to the road!  Make sure your bike is in a proper gear for this climb!

Yeah, its not 2800 ft of climbing.   The Kansas bike course is MUCH tougher than SOR.  There are some rollers and a couple climbs, but not the big grades you saw at Kansas.

This is a total guess, and I am sure someone has something more accurate, but I would say about 1200ft of elevation over the 56 miles.  Its pretty flat.

I'll be jock strapping the half, possibly volunteering for part of it (no body marking!  100 squats the day after a sprint is NOT my idea of a good time...)

I was also thinking about volunteering, but not sure what I could do that would allow me to see Clint during his transitions and most importantly at the finish line.  I think body marking would be about it.

Oh thank gawd.

The fact the last 8 miles are relatively downhill/flat make me pretty psyched, too.

Any recommendations on an affordable place to stay (that still has availability) the night before? Camping is out unfortunately.

We're talking about just driving up that morning from Chicago, but that'll take forever. :/

Hi all,
Thought I'd jump into the conversation. This will be my first HIM, and I have found all of your info helpful. I have done the bike course once already and plan on riding it again. The day I rode the wind was brutal. I found the cross winds rather challenging, riding on an angle.
I'm also training for IM Moo. Nothing like making that big jump from Olympic to IM. (What was I thinking?!?!?!)

Mapquest is saying 1h45m!!

We're looking to stay with a friend out in Gurnee...so hopefully that'll minimize the drive.

I stayed out in the burbs, just south of Gurnee, last year and it was an easy drive espeically at that hour!

I am officially registered and ready for race day. I'm a bit frustrated I have to go through the rigmarole of building again.
