Pre-race routine:

Got up a 3am had my PB&J and Ensure w/ a iced coffee and gatorade.
Event warmup:

Took a 5-8 minute run bu the cabin prior to heading to transition. Kept loose by stretching. Set up T area and walked a little taking in the pre-race nerves. DId Prehab visited POP and donned wetsuit. Swam about 100yds w/ a few pickups down to start.
Swim
  • 30m 42s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

My best swim ever. Went hard off the front and stayed with the big boys and while I got beat up a bit for the 1st 100yds it paid dividends in the feet that I was able to catch. I cruised this swim and had a ridiculously fast time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

Great T1, wetsuit strippers helped w/ the quick time and I was completely calm and relaxed. I used duct tape on the bottom of my cleats to keep the crap out, tore it off at the mount line and shoes popped right into the pedals. Worked like a charm, THANX AARON!!!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 2h 58m 28s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.83 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride. Still cant get the pwer thing down but I am getting better. Felt comfortable the whole ride and never really felt like I pushed. However, my second loop was slower than my first due to starting to feel the effects of the heat.
What would you do differently?:

Not mix gatorade as strong.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Great T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 2h 07m 32s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

This is where everything came apart. The first loop was okay but slower than I had hoped, but the heat was a killer so I slowed down just to be able to keep running. Mile 5 my R hammy locked up and it was a major struggle from there. Mile 7-8 my quads bagan to lock up and I was in full survival mode. Walked most of the hills the second loop and each aid station just to get as much liquid in me as possible.
What would you do differently?:

Pray for cooler weahter
Post race
Warm down:

Tried not to puke or pass out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

HEAT and HUMIDITY

Event comments:

Keith puts on a great race, however, until W Shore road is patched or repaved I think I will find another early season race to do.

Great job Dave! Awesome swim and bike! Yeah, I saw all that flotsam out on the road too and it DID look like a breadcrumb trail. I also saw an unbelievable number of those yellow aerodrink poofy things all over the course . The heat WAS brutal—nice job hangin' in with the leg cramps and all!

Great job in the heat! Awesome swim time.  I think the whole Bristol/Alexandria needed repaving.

nice job on a tough day; the weather didn't allow you to really test how far your fitness has improved but at least we had the 1st race ou fo the way. Send me your files so we can work on better power pacing (killer swim!)

Great work Dave. Sounds like a brutal day out there.

They've been saying that they are going to repave that road for about three years now...
