Pre-race routine:

Flew to Austin Fri evening with Henri after a day of running errands, packing up the bike, etc. Saturday morning reassembled the bike, spent most of the day at the race site for the pre race orientation, packet pick up, racking and talk by Sally Edwards. Saturday evening I met Lesley (denny.l) and her friend Emily. We had a fun dinner at Carrabas ...it was so great to connect with them. Race morning I got up at 4:30, and had a muffin, coffee, and some Odwalla protein drink. Drove to the site.
Event warmup:

Stretching and a short swim.
Swim
  • 23m 9s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a good start drafting off the woman who was directly in front of me during the wade in. Swimming on her toes felt effortless. I lost her when I got caught up checking my navigation with my fogged up goggles. I had to take the goggles off to see. Then I made a tight turn around the bouy. After that I spent the rest of the swim zig zagging across the course. I never found someone to draft off after that. I still had a decent time, but I was really tired after that swim and it affected my cycling.
What would you do differently?:

learn to sight, learn to draft (trust the person I am drafting off of), pace myself
Transition 1
  • 04m 1s
Comments:

this was a new experience for me. it went pretty smoothly. I am sure I will get faster with more experience
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 51m 8s
  • 12 miles
  • 14.08 mile/hr
Comments:

I had thought of myself as a strong cyclist...though now I am not sure why. I think I could have ridden much faster had I not been so tired from the swim. I felt that I spent the whole ride recovering from the swim. I did not push myself at all, as I felt I needed to pace myself for the run. Finally got my energy back at the end of the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Pace myself better on swim. Spend more time training in this area.
Transition 2
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

A new experience. Very crowded and impossible to run with the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...will improve with more experience
Run
  • 30m 44s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt good on the run. No markers so it was difficult to know when it was safe for me to push it. I ran conservatively, especially with the hills and the uneven grassy surface. Twisted my ankle, but caught myself and recovered well. I passed many people, however, most of the strong athletes in my age group were long gone after my slow bike ride. So, I didn't have anyone to really race against.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Very satisfied. I am sure my times will improve with more running experience.
Post race
Warm down:

Met Henri at the finish line. Was speechless. Went for massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My poor navigation on the swim affected my overall time because I swam so much further and was tired for the bike.

Event comments:

My very first triathlon. A great experience for me. Looking forward to becoming even more fit and dong some more races.

Congratulations on your first Tri!  You did great.  I was out there too.  The swim was tough for me as well.  I kept bumping into ladies and noodles and swim angels!  But, I love this race...it's a lot of fun!
