Pre-race routine:

ate an english muffin w/ pb and a gu. this was just part of the long run k and i were doing, so we decided to run the 2 miles to the start and back. we got there, grabbed chips, and went to the bathroom. on a side note: toilet paper in porta-a-johns is so frail. it's like wiping with the dead sea scrolls).
we waited for the start and talked with some people we've met through the ashburn running club
Event warmup:

2 mi. run to the race.

Comments:

it wasn't too well attended, so i thought i would have a shot at a good run. the top 3 were getting tickets to the blues traveler concert and we were considering going anyway, so that was my goal.
the start was through a grass field and then a gravel parking lot before hitting the roads. i took off fast and immediately went off the front. i was running well, but when i hit the first turn, there was an uphill and a wall of wind. i thought i may have gone off too hard and expected people to start streaming past me. the hills and wind must have been too much for them too, though as i was able to hold them off all the way to the turn around.
at the turn i was ~1/4 mile in front and started to think i could win. it was cool to run by the field and have them giving me encouragement as i passed. i eased up a tiny bit to make sure i would have a push at the end and to make sure i didn't blow up. i made the final turn through the parking lot and sprinted down the grass to take my first ever solo overall win! pretty cool.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

cheered on the other runners and waited around for awards. then ran home to finish our long run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

only a few days of speedwork so far with the ashburn running club. also, the 60 mile ride on sat. felt fine though.

Event comments:

great race. small, but i bet it will grow. they had good give-aways, chip timing, and a band at the end. i would definitely recommend the race to anyone.

Congratulations on the OA win, Brad!!  Don't tell the other people in the field that this was "just part of your long run."

Winning must be infinite and definitive,
make that infinitive!

I'd wish ya luck,
but you dont' need any.

very cool.
