Pre-race routine:

I don't have a "routine" yet. This was my first triathlon. I used a porta potty, set up my transition area and tried swimming around to get used to the water and hopefully avoid an asthma attack.
Event warmup:

See swimming thing above
Swim
  • 21m 39s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 53s / 100 meters
Comments:

Typical disasterous swim for me. Asthma hit at first buoy. I was dizzy by the time I got out. It didn't let up until Neva Rd. on the bike. But, I FINISHED! I am happy with that.

Oh yeah...got hit in the back of the head right at the start (accident--women to my right got too close) and had an eppiglotal (not sure I spelled it right--the thing that decides which tube the water goes into) malfunction while my head was under (I inhaled water). Not that I would have avoided the asthma attack had this not happened...but I think I freaked out and irritated my lungs a little sooner than need be.
What would you do differently?:

Skip the swim???? Wait 'til water is warmer? I don't know why I have this lovely reaction. Nice little surprise I got 2 weeks before the race. (I had been pool swimming w/no problems)
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

I lost my goggles taking the top of my wetsuit off. Forgot to retrieve them before going home. Also forgot to retrieve my flip flops. Am I really supposed to be able to remove wetsuit and put helmet on at same time???? Wow, that would take coordination!

I couldn't jump on my bike, there was alot of congestion at the helmet check area coming out...plus I was still struggling to suck enough air in.
What would you do differently?:

Like I mentioned above, I was dizzy, and didn't think about flipping my goggles off taking my top off. I would have paid more attention to what I was doing.
Bike
  • 59m 45s
  • 17 miles
  • 17.07 mile/hr
Comments:

I was wheezing and couldn't catch my breath until ~Neva Rd. turnoff. It got easier after that. I've ridden this course in 52 minutes before, so the asthma really slowed me down.
What would you do differently?:

Put my # on correctly. I had it open on the end that kept cutting (paper cut) my legs as I pedaled. Pre-opened my gels. I was shaky from the amount of albuterol (inhaler) that I needed and could barely open them on the bike. I haul alot of crap around in my Bento Box (inhaler, kleenex and chapstick are always necessary for me) and almost lost a bunch of stuff fumbling around in there.
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Person on other side of bike rack had stuffed her wetsuit into my wheel slot, I assume to keep it off the ground and clean--but I had to remove that before racking my bike and I laid it on the ground. I put my Chapstick on just as I started to run--well, it had melted pretty well and made a huge mess on my face. I also forgot to take my gloves off!
What would you do differently?:

Taken bike gloves off. It was getting hot at this point and even just having to run holding on to them made my hands too sweaty.
Run
  • 35m 8s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

I just died. Lack of sleep, certain time of month, the earlier asthma attack--I just didn't have energy. My 6 year old was at the finish and ran in with me :) I hope brightroom got the photo!
What would you do differently?:

Eaten a 2nd gel. Gotten more sleep...as if that's up to me.

Also, not really related to the run, but I paid no attention to where I was parking when I arrived. I guess there was alot on my mind or something. Anyway, I could not find the car for the life of me! I will need to improve on this next time as well :)
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching. Tried to take a nap but my 6 year old decided "Fat Boy" (newest pet cockroach) needed my attention.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My lungs! Lack of energy. Lack of training in the month of May couldn't have helped either. But, life happens, and I'm always going to have something like that. What HELPED me was that I used my nebulizer first thing in the morning and I did get farther before the asthma attack happened than I did on Tuesday's OWS. I have fully recovered from my nephrectomy...which is faster than I expected. My foot did not act up, my right leg felt good, and my joints did not hurt...'til later anyway:) I consider myself pretty lucky!

Hey, you did well out there.  Congrats on sticking through it all.  I also had problems on the swim.  I hate wave starts.   It was nice meeting you out there today.

I think you should write a book. It all started when I got punched in the head...

Great report. I feel your stress. And rest assured it is typical. Everything in a sprint is rush rush rush...I always think that first timers should start with a race that doesn't have time as the judge.

Too bad about the asthma...some olympians - those who are not allowed to use inhalers try to induce an attack before their competition, then they get it over with...I used to do that to, then I got better meds.

Next time remember. You are a good swimmer, you still don't have gills lol!

Don't beat yourself up about all the little problems...it is all a learning experience! I used to carry cliff shot gels (th one with the "lease" on my race belt until I realized they were cutting into my skin - like a papercut!

You did amazing...think about how much better your next race will be! Look at some of my older results/reports for a play by play progression. And I'm still not there yet!

You rocked this race and did what only a small percentage of people will ever do!

Well done.

Got job pushing through all the complications.  Sounds like if you can get your lungs to cooperate you'll be all over that OWS!
