Pre-race routine:

Chat with family and fellow TRI-Punks, get ready for race.
Event warmup:

Swim
Swim
  • 45m 47s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swallowed some water. Also somewhat out of my routine didn't put body glide on my pits, neck, and cloning machine, still suffering from the rash 1 day laetr.
What would you do differently?:

Body glide my entire body
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

None, was hoping to see some girls doing the nude undress thing, but no luck!
What would you do differently?:

NA
Bike
  • 2h 46m 1s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.24 mile/hr
Comments:

Started puking around mile 20 (my Normann Stadler imatation), four small purges (define small?), which ruined my hydration need for the run. My gut didn't like some of the lake water I swallowed, the E-Tabs I took, the nutrition (Hammer Perpeteum), something totally unrelated, or all of the above?

Otherwise a was a good strong bike, my lungs and legs felt great!
What would you do differently?:

Go back to a none protein based nutrition plan GU or Hammer Gel
Transition 2
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

didn't get one pebble off of my foot, which let me know it was hitching a ride around mile 3.
What would you do differently?:

Clean feet off better.
Run
  • 2h 32m 32s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Starting cramping at mile 5, had to start walk/run combo by mile 7 (see bike). The hydration I would normally have ingested on the bike was wasted and/or slowed down by tummy problems, leading to dehydration. A super KC Multisport friend of mine noticed my plight and forced me to take two of his E-Tabs (I figured they would make me puke again), he insured me I wouldn't get sick (thanks Bill). Within 10 minutes I was able to resume a slow run to the finish.

Very capable of a 8:45 per run on a HIM, but not today!
What would you do differently?:

Not puke on the bike leg.
Post race
Warm down:

The cold fron that changed the temp about 15 degree's took care of my warm down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Involuntary purging, heat and humidity.

Event comments:

1) A IM series race needs wet suit stripper's.
2) The bike leg didn't have enough drink stations. My aero bottle (sportsa drink) was empty a good 15 minutes before the 1st two drink stations. My seat bottles are for nutrition and water. The run portion was perfect.
3) The weather spoiled the post race events.

Totally agree with you there. I'm glad you were able to finish with your GI issues. I saw a few of you guys by the side of the road puking. Did you see Dorothy?

Nice effort to hold it together and get through the day.  You are going to have a great IMW.  It was great meeting you at the race.  Looks forward to a run some time while I am in for work.

Good luck with all the rest of your goals in 2008!

There must have been something at mile 20 on the bike that induced vomiting.  This was the same place I got sick.  Or maybe you are responsible for me getting sick since you were ahead of me.  Hmmmmm.......

Great race and great race report.  Congrats on a strong finish with all of the cramping and stomach issues!  You rocked the bike course!

Ironman Wisconsin here we come!

You are going to rock IMWI. I hope I hear that it's easier than this course! Congrats on a great race, despite the puking

BTW- did your kids have fun? They were so darn cute!

Good job finishing despite the lake water ingestion and the ensuing 'hilarity.'
