Pre-race routine:

Pryed my eyes open at 3:30am after having a plumber at my house until midnight the night before working on a sewer backup. But after a shower and Starbucks Doubleshot I was O.K. I had the car packed the night before so I was off at 4am and on the road. Ate a banana and coffee cake in the car with a Gatorade. Stopped for a #2 bathroom break before getting to the race site.
Parked my car by chance next to a couple friends, so we unloaded and walked the road to the transition area. After bodymarking I set up transition and basically waited around for the start by talking to Brett and Todd, and just walking around.
Event warmup:

Just stretching. I felt pretty good.
Swim
  • 32m 25s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a swim I felt like I was stroking and getting nowhere. I couldn't find anybody to draft, and kept having to clear my mask from fog and water. I definitely feel stronger than my time. But, at the same time, I practice this discipline way less than the other two, so I get what I deserve.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more. Better goggles.
Transition 1
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

During T1 I felt I was going slow (sitting down to put on shoes, drying off, etc) so I was shocked to see this time being faster than I anticipated.
What would you do differently?:

I'm getting Tri Bike shoes this week. Not dry off so much.
Bike
  • 1h 18m 52s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.91 mile/hr
Comments:

I didn't mind this course, and felt comfortable despite getting passed like crazy. Damn there were some good riders in this race.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate a little better.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

A good T2 for me. Taking my bike shoes off wastes a lot of time, but my Yanks work well.
What would you do differently?:

I told you, I'm getting Tri Bike shoes this week. Give me a break already.
Run
  • 1h 05m 17s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a fun run for me because in the first 100 yards I was passed by #150 (I was #151), who I noticed was also a clyde. This then lit my competitive fire and got me to pick up my pace and not walk (though I really really wanted to). For the rest of the run we dueled back and forth, with the last stretch after that left hand turn to the finish line being the point I turned it on. My thinking was "I won't remember this pain, but I will remember losing to #150". It helped.
Gave the 87 year old guy some encouragement as a passed him the last 200 yards...did he kick a$$ or what?
What would you do differently?:

My run pace sucks. I need to train in the heat more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around. Bottle of water and fruit at the T shirt tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Taking time away from work and my family to train more. But that's not going to happen.

Event comments:

For me personally this was a huge milestone because I set a PR by breaking the three hour mark. Plus the running strategy against #150 showed me I can think during a race. I left this race feeling like I took a step forward as a triathlete.
