I wont be able to do the race but I can tell you about Camp Blanding at bit.

Def. very hot there. Lake is nice and calm. There wont be any traffic really. Plan on hot humid and no breeze.

I did it last year and it was smoking hot but fun.  I had planned on doing it this year but they waited so long to post the race i've already made diff. plans.  I do some of my training swims in that lake, very calm.  2 loop bike course that has one tough uphill section.  One giant hill to run half way through the run.  They don't call it the HOT just because it's the Hammerhead Olympic Triathlon, it's amazon hot.  Today it was 95 and i'm 25 min away from Camp Blanding.

Last year had a pretty good post-race meal with lots of give aways.  Nice finishers hat, friendly people, and like the previous poster said no traffic since it's on a military base.

I've never raced it but I have jockstrapped it.  It is very hot and be prepared to grind some short, but steep hills.  I will probably be there again with Jeff (Q) as he takes his revenge on this course.  Being on the military base is pretty cool too.  They have some memorials to walk through and great places to take some photos.

Our club puts the race on, and I was the bike course guy last year.  This year I'm planning to race..it's easier.

I'm wondering where the "giant hills" are, otherwise the previous descriptions are accurate.    The pavement is not in great shape in a few places on the bike course, but there's zero traffic.  We usually have kids who volunteer from the reform school on the base, and they're great about cheering, handing out ice cold sponges, etc.

Papson (Chris?) I see you're in Orange Park.  You should come ride with us at About Bikes sometime.

I'll look you guys up and see if can get out there with you.  Sounds like fun.

Unless they changed the run course there is one giant hill that you run up hit a water station and run down.  That was the one I was talking about.  As for the bike that little out and back section that breaks off of the loop is just a long grinding hill when your coming back up.

Chris

Prepare for scorching heat if you plan on doing the HOT! I just did the run portion last year in a relay and was glad that was all I had to do. Kingsley Lake is an awesome lake to swim in and is very refreshing to jump in to after finishing the race. I'd love to do the complete race sometime, but we have to defend our 1st place finish in the relay last year.

Doing it for the third year in a row...
The hill between miles 3 and 4 is tough on the run, the bike has some long continuous uphills in the portion that you go off from the main loop, and the swim is warm and coming back directly into the sun...
BUT, that being said, its a great race, wonderful bunch of people, and fun times

PS-You can check out my album for more on it...

staying the night since I live too far down.  I really liked it when they gave us the cabins the first year I did it.   For some reason they won't give out the cabins anymore- something about us not checking out in time, but they never did tell us about that.  And we asked!   So now we have to find a hotel.

I've always driven down that morning - especially if you're coming from Gainesville, it's not a bad drive. Plus if you're coming from the west, you don't have to try to make that left hand turn into Camp Blanding like all of the people from the Jacksonville beaches.
