Warsaw Optomist Sprint Tri on Sat June 28th. Other than the weeds in the water making it sort of creepy, it's a great course.

This was my first and only triathlon last year.  I loved it!  I got lazy with training, so I will not be participating this year...maybe next year.

...and although the weedy water was a bit creepy, since I love dressing in costume & felt like I was dressed as a sea monster...it was all good.

All I could think about was the movie "Creature from the Black Lagoon". Thought about just grabbing the weeds and pulling myself through the water!

I'm in...1st race of the season. My buddy told me about the weeds. Sounds like motivation to swim faster and get the heck outta the water before Nessie gets me. I hope it doesn't ruin my cool new Tri suit. Actually, I'm looking forward to it. I hear it's a good race and I'll be there with a bunch of my teammates from Triple Threat.

I'm in.  They changed the run course....there should only be about three blocks or so where the bike course and the run course overlap this year.

I am doing it. They did change the run course this year, and added a half mile and a steep downhill just before the finish.

It will be my first race this year, looking forward to it!

Is the downhill on the run, the same hill that we rode up on the bike course last year?

No, We will still ride and then run up the gradual hill on Chestnut street. The run down the hill is VERY steep. It will require you to slow down in order to avoid injury.

If you are fimiliar with Winona Lake, it is the road that comes down next to Rodeheaver Auditorium.

I'm in! Third year in a row. The water should be up a bit from last year. Since we had barely any rain last year the lake was shallow. You could walk almost 1/4 of the way out. Hopefully that will help with the weeds, but I doubt it! Ethier way it's a great race!

Does anyone know how far the bike goes out on Pierceton? I am coming in from Ann Arbor Mich the night before so I probably won't have time to check it out before it gets dark and the maps on the site don't show you where the turn around is (I am guessing it is a turn around)

Anything else an out of of towner would need to know about this race?

Also - Any recommendations on where to stay - I am a bit of a slacker and was just going to camp out, but since they are predicting rain the whole weekend I thought I might just spring for the room.

The bike route goes to Pierceton and turns around right before the main north/south road...I think it's SR13.  If you drive it, there's a little water tower on your left (as you're driving from Warsaw to pierceton).  The turn around is not far after that water tower.  You need to leave your bike in a hill climbing gear and get in your shoes quick after you cross the mounting line because you ride straight out of transition, turn left, go up a hill, turn right, continue the hill, turn left, continue the hill then it's over.  It's basically flat after that.

The Comfort Inn in Warsaw is close.  Any of the hotels in the vicinity of Grace College / Winona Lake will work for you.

You end up running up that same hill at about mile 3 of the run course.

The swim is WEEDY.

Thanks for all the info - esp about the hills and the weeds.  I always love it when they put the hill at the end of the run.  So much more fun that way

I was checking out google maps in satellite and it seems that right before Pierceton there is a little turn around thing in the road at about N 7th - is that the turn around or do they just have you do it in the middle of the road?

Hopefully I will be getting in a bit early and can take Pierceton into town to get a feel, but the word flat makes me happy.  Now if only it was also not windy/rainy/haily

Yes, the turn around is a little tear drop shape deal where the road splits.  You go counter-clockwise and don't really even have to stop - just slow down.

The hill at the end (of the run) is downhill and, depending on how beat up my legs and feet are feeling, it is "runable".  The first day I did it, I walked down it backward....I was sore....the nest day I walked it, then was able to run down it gently the third day.

There are two chunks of road that arte really bumpy.  There is a nice but short chunk has has been black topped, but on either side of the black top, it's rough.  My Garmin flew off my wrist mount.  I did find it though on the side of the road....still working!  :-)

Another question - How buggy/off road is the run.  I know with all the rain, the mosquitoes up here have been almost beyond insane, and I know you have had as much rain as we have.

Thanks again for answering all my questions!

I ran the run route last on Saturday, but the only bugs I ran through was one swarm of gnats.  It was really humid on the greenway everyday that I ran there, but the bugs weren't bad.....at least last week they weren't.  There WAS, however, a deer standing in the little creek....very cool.  :-)

I think all deer will have fled by the time I get anywhere near the run - all the deer with any sense that is.

AF - feel free to introduce yourself if you see me among the melee - I will have a Red White and Blue sleveless jersey on after the swim - giant Ford Logo - I'm part of FAST (Ford Athletic Swimming and Triathlon) club and we go for gaudy (but really, what jersey ISN't gaudy).

I am the only one from my club/BT group making the trip down, so it would be nice to at least get to say hi to someone from BT : )

Ok.  What AG are you in?  Not sure what I'm wearing yet. I might wear my wetsuit just because it will probably be legal and why not.  I have a silver and light blue Specialized bike.  I am in F 40-44.

W 25-29 - no wet suit  - I'll have on a swim top - bright blue and green palm trees.  Bright blue/teal Felt bike with white branding.  Goes with the bright blue Mazda (sense a theme? - if only I was brave enough to go for the bright blue hair).

Consider this a little challenge within the challenge of doing a tri - a sorta where's waldo while waldo is running around (cause me running around a compleatly new course isn't gonna be challenge enough

I like the run course this year.  They have a perfectly fine Greenway that they didn't use last year.  The Greenway chunk is only about a mile, then you do a loop through a neighborhood, then back down the Greenway, up the hill, down the hill, loop back to the start.

Nice people along the way.  Winona Lake is a pretty friendly community and it's a seminary campus.

Yep, I was there! I was the guy in the Soviet jersey if any of you saw me as you flew by! I wasn't the fastest by any means, but I did love it!

I've discovered that Tri's are like crack.....one time and you're hooked.

Here's a bit of video from the Cycling section, by the way. I had a camera on board on the handlebars. :D

This is awesome.  I remember passing you and playing leapfrog at the end - I made some flippant comment about you being to much of a challenge not to try and catch up with.

Great Video Tom.

I remember seeing you both on the bike and the run (kind of a distinctive jersey ).

Thanks for posting the video...

I think I remember you as well, but by that point, I was also getting pretty frazzled.  I've never been so wrecked after even my longest day on the bike! My thing has always been long distance riding, with a record day of 167 miles in 15 hours. That didn't wipe me out as bad as a tri did. Surprised

Someone hollered at me in Russian as well, on the cycling segment, but all I caught was privet! (Hello in Russian).
