Overcast
Total Time = 2h 31m 6s
Overall Rank = 96/268
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 20/41
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4am, had a little over 2 hour drive
Had small bowl of cereal, and one ClifBar, plus 2 Red Bull on the way

Got there at 6:45, timing was okay for the 8am start, just enough time for a relaxed preparation
Event warmup:

No warmup other than baking in the wetsuit
Swim
  • 24m 4s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 36s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was a good swim, pretty consistent but I got weaker in the last 5 min
My strategy worked again, dont start all the way at the front but rather behind the biggest fight and then roll up from behind when the field had thinned out
What would you do differently?:

No OWS the night before...
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Was a fairly fast transition by my standard...;-) Time was #29 in AG
Had a little bit of a problem with the wetsuit. At that time I had a very slight cramp in the right leg, but was no problem in the rest of the race
Had one gel in T1 plus a sip Gatorade
What would you do differently?:

More Body Glide?
Bike
  • 1h 13m 23s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.32 mile/hr
Comments:

In hindsight, I feel that I did not push as hard as I could have, even though the pace is pretty good for me.
The wind on the long straigth sections sucked
As always, I was constantly being passed, especially the first 15 miles, that sucked!!!
What would you do differently?:

Get a faster bike, get faster legs!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Got another gel and some Gatorade
I had put my hat and race number on top of my shoes so had to put these on with my bike shoes on, need to change that, I hate walking or even standing in my bike shoes
What would you do differently?:

See above, put shoes on top of hat and race number
Run
  • 50m 18s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out with a very good pace, the first two miles has an average of 7:52 and felt fairly good
Running through the campground was great because there was no monotony!
I had some problems at the second aid station, must have drunk the Gatorade too fast or too much, my stomach was upset for the next 5 min or so.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Note that this is a 10k PR for me!!
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a LOT, walked around and got my stuff pretty quickly. Had only a yoghurt right after the race. My stomach was pretty upset right after the run

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight, bike

Event comments:

Very much like the race! The distances seem to be fairly close to standard, maybe a little short on the swim and run. The flat course turns out great times, I came in about 4 min faster than I thought based on distance and improved my oly PR by more than 10 minutes. I will come back next year!

Not sure if this was really 1500m, from the time I would think it was maybe up to 10% less...

AHR 173, MHR 183 Had Gatorade at every station (5) The Garmin showed 6.12 and there should have been perfect satellite coverage. That plus the PR time makes me wonder if the course was a little shorter than 10k. ANYWAY!
Course: Very flat run around the lake, the last 4 miles through a nice camp ground, lots of people cheering, and several had water hoses sprinkling (that was actually the best!!)

Great race!  That's one wicked fast swim split.  The wind definitely increased as the day wore on.  For sure we felt the wind out of the W/SW on the bike.

Congratulations!
