Pre-race routine:

Waited for husband to get home from work, and left the house late. Had to go back to get money to register thought I would miss registration, but I didn't. Didn't feel well on the way there, heartburn, and allergies were bothering me. Took a pepcid and should have taken a benadryl; couldn't breathe well.
Event warmup:

Got there late so I had to park far away and jogged to registration for warm up. Registered and then had to hang out for half an hour waiting for the race to start. Jogged around the loop and stretched to warm up.

Comments:

I started right up front with the jackrabbits. I wanted to run there pace for as long as I could. It was nerve wracking waiting for the start as I was afraid I would get run over by all those fast guys. There were only two other women up front with me. When we took off, I was shocked to see the pace at a 5:44 but I wanted to run with them to see how long I could hold it. When I saw the first mile at a 6:50 I was very excited, but at about 1.5 miles I started to feel it. I couldn't breathe well, and my throat was like the Sahara desert, something I have never felt but I am sure was due to the allergies. I was passed by a few people who I caught and passed about a half mile later. I finally fell in behind a 60 year old man, and told myself if he could run that fast I could keep up with him, came in shortly behind him.
What would you do differently?:

Skip the water table, I can't drink the water I just pour it on myself. I don't think it helps. Maybe I can holler to the volunteers to throw it on me as I run by :).
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around to cool down, drank a bottle of water and had a banana. Took sometime for my heart rate to come down. About 10 minutes after finish my stomach started cramping, and that hurt sat down for awhile. These evening races are fun, except that unlike morning races, you carry everything you ate for the day with you...that's a little tough.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to do some speed work. Though I am not sure I can run much faster than that.

Event comments:

This is a nice race put on by the Central Jersey Road Runners club. It is the first in a series of three. It is a lot of fun to run with people that are there to have a good time, of course winning is always good.

Awesome race!  Drinking from a dixie cup at full stride is an art form I haven't figured out yet either.

It may be time to think up a new screen name! You are definitely a runner!! Congrats on 2nd in AG!

I guess I'll be watching the 4th of July showdown from the cheap seats

Great race! I never drink water on a 5k, I just cruise pass the table. I make sure to drink a lot the day before the race so I don't need to so much. Sounds like after a next race you'll be running under 7:30's
