Comments:

Heat wave in SF; weather reports show SF was 97 degrees yesterday. I rarely - ok, never - have the occasion to run in these temps. Combine the high temps with little air movement, and it made for my first crappy race. I've been relatively lucky to have chosen race that were on perfect weather days or cooler days. I certainly had this coming!

Despite the heat, the race went well until the 4.8 mile mark when I could feel myself slowing gradually. Until that point I was on-pace to run a 46 minute 10K. After that point, speeding up simply meant that I wasn't slowing down. Not sure whose idea it was to make runners run the last .2-.3 miles over the black top at Monster Park, but upon entering the black-top in the parking lot the temps rose by at least 10 degrees, and I just felt like puking by that point.

Beyond that, the water points were a joke and poorly orchestrated. I was frustrated that the volunteer at point #2 didn't have ANY water cups filled, but instead waited until the runners approached the table to fill-up the cups. I had to balance my need for water with the pull to finish in the best time possible. Given the temps, there could have been more water stations, and volunteers better trained.
What would you do differently?:

Bring my own water.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat!

Event comments:

Lack of water stations: the volunteers didn't have the water cups filled, and station #2 the kid manning the water point would wait until you approached the station to fill-up your water cup. The event sponsor could do a better job of training volunteers. Stopping for water stations slowed me down.

This race was longer than 10K. My garmin was set for distance and pace, but it recorded 6.21 miles about .10 mile before the end of the race (for an unofficial time of 48:21). Other runner's garmins sounded their alarm at the same time mine did. A review of the Track and Field certification on the event's web site suggests we didn't start in the right place.
