Total Time = 2h 17m 40s
Overall Rank = 24/156

Age Group Rank = 7/14
Pre-race routine:

Up early, had some toast and coffee. Got the car packed up and headed north. Had some more coffee and banana on the way. Rob was two cars ahead of me heading into the park, so we were parked two spots away. Chatted a little while unpacking, then off to set up.
Event warmup:

After setting up transition, I got my wetsuit on and swam out to the first buoy. After swimming back to the beach, I caught up with Jeff and Rob and passed the time until the race started.
Swim
  • 17m 48s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

I'm sorry, but there is no way that this course was only 0.5 miles. I was cruising along pretty well and although I am not the fastest swimmer by any means, I know I was pushing it pretty hard. It was probably the first race for me where I felt I could roll with the crowd and not worried about people swimming over me or gettin smacked with an elbow or foot. I also navigated real well too, so I figure my pace was at least sub 1:45/100
What would you do differently?:

I definately need to be more aggressive, especially in these smaller races with tiny waves like this one had.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

There was a long run up a hill from the lake to T1. I dont know my exact time because it was factored into the bike. I tried a new technique of removing my wetsuit as soon as I exit the water, which worked out ok, but still needs work. Otherwise, my transition times seem to be getting better.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 39s
  • 25 miles
  • 18.37 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a pretty challenging course in my opinion. I have been using the powermeter which is great, but I have been learning mostly about IM strategy so I have to learn more about where I should be with the shorter races. I still feel as though I pushed it adequately, although I was obviously slower than most of my AG.
What would you do differently?:

Push it!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

First time ever taking the shoes off while on the bike and keeping them in the pedals. T2 was pretty smooth too. I cant wait to do a race with chips so I can see how fast my transitions are going.
Run
  • 38m 13s
  • 5.7 miles
  • 06m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

The run continues to be the strong area. I really dont have much to work on at this point as far as the run goes, I feel pretty comfortable where I am.
Post race
Warm down:

had some food. relaxed in the shade.

Well maybe you do not know your exact pace in the swim but Rob and Jeff and maybe a few other peers gave you some reality check.

Fantastic running.

IM biking training may not pay off for these shorter events. (perhaps not a phenomenon in running where Marathon training can make a whippet out you)
