Aurora, Colorado

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 12m 59s
Overall Rank = 8/411
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 1/25
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:00 am, ate two pieces of toast and jelly. Drove 1.5 hours to race. Took 4 espresso shots worth of Clif Shots about 10 minutes before swim.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 16m 50s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went out hard to clear the crowd and then just swam to buoy. Course was way long probably at 1000m or so. Was in 7th wave of 8 so I passed people from every wave ahead of me. After turn I found two others in my wave and tried to draft one of them. Didn't have much luck so I just sighted off them to the end. Since I could see two in my age group, I didn't really think my swim would be as high as 11 of 411 (2.7%). Sleeve of wetsuit turned off my watch so I was timeless for the rest of the race (as usual).
Transition 1
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Practiced mounting bike w/shoes attached a few times the day before but since the bike exit was so close to my rack position, I didn't take the risk and instead ran in my bike shoes.
Bike
  • 31m 51s
  • 13.67 miles
  • 25.75 mile/hr
Comments:

According to BT Route Tracker the course was 13.1 which gives me 24.7 mph. Lost quite a bit of time at the end trying to get out of my shoes while on the bike at which I'm still terrible.
What would you do differently?:

Need race wheels and a TT bike to compete with the top riders.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Since I was the first bike in, I couldn't get my bike to rack because the rack was loose and swinging.
Run
  • 22m 38s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran hard. Knew Dime and KiloDave were catching me fast from behind so I just did what I always do which is try to hang on to people who pass me as long as I can. Got pretty hot near the end.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

None.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing.

You frickin' KILLED it!

I am humbled (and that is not an easy thing to do... I am afraid).

Now, work on that run, enter an IM and qualify for KONA... You have it.

Holy smokes that was a fast bike!  I've seen some of your posts but didn't know you were 45-49 AG.  Don't think I want to be racing with you   Great race overall!
